I have the X-E1 as my X system camera with XF18 and XF18-55 lenses.
Earlier I've thought that I should add the XF55-200 lens to my Fuji X system as soon as it is available, but lately I've been starting to think about the X-S1 instead.

-------

My conclusions for this new thought:

1. The XF18-55 is all the range I need when I'm shooting inside in low light. Here is when the APS-C X trans sensor is needed mainly for my shooting. I don't really need longer zoom for this.

2. As soon as my upcoming X100s arrives at my "local store", 186 miles away (one way). I'd better buy what I need! (I live on the countryside)

(I could order online but I always trade in my older gear here and they give great credit... It would take longer for me to sell my old stuff from here too...)

So this time when I go to my "local store" I am going to get what I need in one time!

- The gear I'll get is:
Fuji X100s, XF35 lens and probably the X-S1 (as the price now is pretty low on that store for a new one)

-------

The reasons for getting X-S1 over the XF55-200:

- Wildlife and nature walks!

I've read that the X-S1 can tolerate some moisture and dust in the wild.
And as I will be out walking in daylight I won't need that light sensitive APS-C sensor in the X-E1.

And if there ever will be an XF??-600 something it will cost my lungs and liver...

------

This is my newest thought as I need to really organize everything about what I'm going to buy when I am at the store.

The shopping list again: X100s, XF35 and X-S1 (instead of telezoom lens for X-E1)

Need help from you who owns both an X system camera and X-S1!!
Could the X-S1 complement my existing kit as my nature camera in daylight?
What are your experiences of this combination?

Thought I'd start a discussion on a subject I spend a lot of time in - which is (H)igh (D)ynamic (R)ange photography.

I've been addicted to this since the tools first came out and I saw some amazing photos of Liverpool shot using this technique.

Now - there's a lot of cameras out there that do the HDR thing.... but I - personally - find that the camera designers know what the term means but just don't know how to implement it properly. I've used it on Canon's and on Sony's..... and then the end result is that I still shoot 'triples' with AE bracketing.... and sort it out later! Because the camera's version is so weak that they might as well not have bothered!

Anyway - what's everyone else's experience of the X-S1's implementation?

I did a quick grab-shot at 1600%... and felt seriously cheated.

However - I shot a bracketed image of the sunset the other night and this is what came out of it - using Photomatix......

It isn't one of those great memorable shots... but it shows what's supposed to happen - and it's, to my eye's, much better than what I'd expect from the built-in hdr...

PS - I wish Fuji would get their act together and give us some real bracketing capability. +/- 1 stop was amazing in the days of slides.... but Canon have been giving us +/- 2 stops for ages... and I'd love to be able to go further - like maybe up to +/- 5 stops. I might use that range once in a blue moon - but if it wasn't there, I'd guarantee that the shots needing it would come thick and fast! Oh - and maybe 5 bracket shots instead of just 3?

Fuji - if you're reading this - pay attention and get your finger out!

So - any comments..... anyone......?

Rebecca.

As I am thinking of getting the X-S1, due to its price drop to 399€ (at my local camera store at least), what settings do you X-S1 users use?

My goal if I get the X-S1 would be to use it in the nature during daylight.
I want to achieve as good dynamic range as possible. No need for low light at all as the X-E1 and X100s serves this purpose. The X-S1 would serve as my long range zoom and daylight shooting camera in the "wild".

Settings questions for greatest possible dynamic range and best possible IQ:

- Maybe limit auto ISO to 800 max? I know that this isn't the APS-C X trans!
- Modes for dynamic range?
- Other settings?

I want to try to shoot wildlife and nature stuff.

Ok - I'm being prolific here - with starting discussions....

I got my X-S1 because it had better video than a Sony camcorder and the external mic-socket. I didn't necessarily get it because it's a state-of-the-art camera.

Today - at my sister's wedding - I gave it a work-out and.... I guess 'suprised' is a good way of putting it.

So - autofocus... Starting the video already zoomed in on a subject gave a modicum of hunting around before it locked in.... and starting zoomed out was much better but still wavered in and out of focus once I'd zoomed in a fair bit! I don't remember my other camera's having this issue.... and my Sony DSLR just locks in like a limpet mine and won't let go!

In the restaurant for the reception and party... it was ok for the early part of the event... but once the light outside started going down, the autofocus capability dropped off considerably. Eventually, I had to be carefull with what I was shooting video or still of.... and I spent most of the 2nd half of the evening using manual focus.

Has anyone else has issues with autofocus under extremes of lighting or zoom?

My opinion now is that it's a great replacement for my 3 year old Canon bridge camera.... for daylight and general use... but when the light goes down and the requirements are more 'stringent', I'll be digging out the Sony gear..... and I'm still going to be getting the A57 body.... just not right now though.....

Funny - I'd heard that Fuji's AF system was much improved... but my old F602z was better at the extremes like festivals and gigs.... Is there something I'm missing.... like a firmware upgrade....... or is there a 'magic combination' of settings that suddenly boost the performance of the AF...?

I'm considering an Fuji X-S1 or a Canon SX50 HS. The attractive feature of the canon is the 50x optical zoom compared to the 26x optical zoom on the x-s1. On the other hand, I like the large sensor of the x-s1. I'm interested in knowing more about the Intelligent Digital Zoom on the X-S1. Does it really work, or is it not much different than just cropping the image? With the digital zoom, it's the equivailent of 52x, so it's very similar to the sx50. The question is how is the quality of photos taken with the digital zoom?

Thanks to anyone who has some input for me.

Howie

As I can't afford an X Pro1 (haven't found a buyer for the wife yet) and I want some options when out on the street, and the Nikon plus lens(es) is too heavy...I picked up a refurbished x-s1 from the Fuji store for 400quid.

have been mighty impressed, if i was a PI this would def be my snooping camera of choice :)

Just wish the lens hood would "snap" in place, does any one else's come off a bit too easily or is it a problem with mine I wonder. It doe's kinda pop into place but a little knock and it "pops" out again. bit of a hassle when putting it in and out of the bag.

EXR sensor plus wide angle gives very pleasing landscapes I will say that

cheers
v
