A friend told me a little bit about this, but I'm still unclear on the technology and image quality. Anyone have experience with the Lytro?

  • Matt, it's definitely a bit different and leaving some of the most important part of photography to post, I'll confess I don't like that either. That's one of the reasons that I DO like film over digital (other than skin tones) Film teaches photography and digital makes lazy photographers because it almost rewards you for fixing it later and then trains you that way...

However, change in inevitable and so we may all be using this technology in a few years...

Nobody here will have any experience you can't buy them yet.
At this stage they are a toy product designed for use at parties and the like but I'm sure over time the technology will mature. Things to consider about them are that at this stage the software required is Mac only and all images have to be stored on Lytros web site for the image refocussing features to work so realistically their use will be extremely limited for many people and only around 10% of the IT population will even have the option to be able to buy one.

@collierportraits its not even that it leaves DoF to post (which in current form it only does in a half assed 2 point way) but that it looks hideous/cheap and current distribution for is flash in Facebook.
    yuck

  • I was moderately excited when I saw the first advertisement for the Lytro. I played around on their site with the selectable depth of field feature and it was fun. Image quality was very low and the camera lacks even basic, manual exposure controls. It is a camera that can only be used in good light and produces images that can only be played back with special software. It allows your audience to choose the way they want to see your image and would require a great deal of thoughtful composition-related trial and error to produce images that are pleasing and "on-task" throughout a wide range of subject matter. The only real benefit would be in linear front-to-back compositions with equally interesting subjects in a layered approach. Too narrow for me to consider spending good money on.

Matt's correct. An extraordinarily narrow concept that investors have thrown millions at. They're going to have to quickly and dramatically improve the Lytro--I mean fast--or the company will be gone in a heartbeat.
  • Parties aren't known for their adequate lighting. "Puking Joe" would likely be a blob of dark color-noise!

    Hahah surprisingly upbeat about it.

Still, confirms for me that it seems so far to be just about a gimmick and that its awkward to use/hold

Steve huff did a review of it. Basically an expensive 1mp camera which has poor quality images.

Funny how the guy repeatedly confuses it with the object in the other hand. Is he trying to pass a subtle message?

You can play with the focus point on the images that Steve Huff included in his blog post. Just click on the image to move the focus point. Mental, but I suspect that we'll all have had as much fun out of it as we're likely to get by clicking Steve's pics.

Maybe I'm not easily impressed but it doesn't strike me as much fun or use.
you have to get close to stuff to get the DoF as Kai points out so whats the point

I'm sure ill be proven wrong tho

  • It seems almost like an Apple gimmick, and not just the packaging. I myself, being an engineer, like the idea and tech involved. Its a little different and i'm interested to see where the technology goes...as for the Lytro though, no thanks.

I wouldn't go with Apple gimmick, I'm not sure what you mean, but i wouldn't consider anything Apple make is a gimmick, maybe you can tell me what product you're referring to?

As for the packaging, well Apple have made the experience of opening the box and seeing the product a pleasurable one, like presents on your birthday or christmas and MANY other companies have seen this and tried to emulate it - Samsung VERY noticeably so I dont really see that as unusual.
