All the shots done with the 18mm are shockingly soft!

It's been said the lenses used in this press photo shoot were pre-production, and that Fujifilm was still refining the 18mm. I guess we'll know soon enough though!

I'm amazed that this would be so and true. Fuji launching a new from scratch system, and still being in the process of refining the 18mm... I'd rather think this is jabba talk, and the 18mm will be softer than the 2 others.

I have to ask you guys as I am in danger of being really biased.

If you can be neutral and look at the pictures from the Nikon D800E (be fairer) and Canon 5D Mark III, are they better than the output of these?

Of course I have came to a conclusion but like I said, want to avoid being biased and weigh your thoughts with my own.

WilzWorkz7, it's horses for courses and depends what you mean by better, and what you want to do with the output.

36MP in the D800 obviously gives you the capapbility for huge prints and the availability to downsample to boost low light performance etc. It also allows you much more selective and very high quality cropping, almost giving you telephoto capability without the telephoto lens. Also FX with its large bright 100% viewfinder really aids in WYSIWYG composition.

Printing "regular" size prints or posting on the web will you see the difference? - probably not - but you will have much greater versatility, albeit with the extra size, weight and cost of the equipment.

As I say - horses for courses in my view!

It also means that to get decent images you will have to use the absolute best lenses available and have perfect technique. Several commentators have already pointed out that this sensor is now out resolving lenses meaning that it will show every little optical flaw in images.

Yes - shooting technique will be critical (as it always really should have been - but we get lazy!), as will be good glass. And of course its the shooter that makes the images, not the camera. But personally I think the "out-resolving" bit has been a bit overplayed. IMHO this will be more for pixel peepers or in "billboard" prints - for must of us I supsect results will be pretty darned good - but, as I mentioned ealier, for $$$$$!

True if you need to pixel peep or print at billboard size to see improved results I can't see a benefit for probably 99% of potential owners. The more I see about the D800 the more I think a good s/hand D700 will be a great buy for me at least.

Yup - but it has excellent, some say superb, video. That'll appeal to some.
