JB Camera Design: Fuji X100 Black
  • Fuji X100 with JB Design Half Case 1
Fuji X100 with JB Design Half Case 4
Fuji X100 with JB Design Half Case 2
Fuji X100 with JB Design Half Case 3

I decided to get this half case from JB Camera Design. It was $30 and worth every penny. The material is this unique hand poured rubber-plastic. It feels durable and grippy.

    Pros:
    Extra grip
    Light weight
    Color options (alt to leather)
Access to battery and SD card
    Cut out for mic
Simple, clean, and easy to attach
Doesn't attract dirt or scuffs easily
    Price

    Future improvements:
    More coverage
    Even thinner
Separate tripod screw so you can keep the case on
More colors (maybe purple, white, or yellow)

Not sure if I like it or not, I like the IDEA, but I think I prefer the leather half cases.

    good to have options though

Btw, I've used a Gariz on my X100 for the last couple weeks. I've got a Ciesta leather on my X10. They are worlds apart. Now that I own both, I wish I hadn't cheaped out and bought the Ciesta. The Gariz beats it hands down in both quality and utility.
  • The Gariz does look really sweet but I couldn't justify spending that much for about the same amount of protection/coverage. Does the bottom plate make it substantially heavier at all? I might consider it whenever I get an X Pro1 (which I'm sure Gariz will make a case for).

They also have one for X10 but they really need to make one that has separate tripod screw so you can keep the case on.

EDIT: Was wondering whether it is possible to replace the screw with a tripod screw....

+1. That was my first impression too.

And if this is plastic, then is paying this more than a leather worth it?

they emphasize it's hand pour not normal factory made. hence higher price. lol.

Hand pour? Oh goodness...what will they come out with next to charge higher prices?

  • Why are some people on here so negative? It's like a forum disease. You judge things before you touch/use/own it. And I'm not just talking about this case. Frankly, that's just sad.

Anyways, so for $30 you can only get synthetic leather cases. A close comparison would be the horusbennu case. I bought that case and the quality was very poor. I will upload some pics later before I send it back for a refund.

The JB case does not feel plasticky. Something more of a blend with rubber like the interior of a $30k+ car. It's sturdy but still a bit flexible. It does look and feel hand poured because it's more flawless, seemless and textured compared to a mass machine made product. None of those cheap molding lines of plastic jutting out. I was concern it was just a piece of plastic at first too but as soon as you see and feel it in person those doubts are gone. Also it's made here in the US so shipping was a lot faster. It's kind of nice knowing it's not outsourced like everything else in America and it's produced by fellow x100 enthusiasts like ourselves. I'm hoping these guys get the support they need so they can improve on their next products. Then we can get quality products that are based directly on our feedback. I honestly would pay $50 for this case if I was looking at it in stores. And this is their first attempt at a case. $30 is a freakin deal, less than a tank of gas. Come on people.

well, we didn't say it's bad or what if you go back to read our comments. but a rubber-plastic case is still made by plastic, isn't it? we just hope that the case will be improved with a tripod screw.

    peace. :)
  • Honestly I'm not sure what the material is. It's definitely not your everyday household plastic and does not share the same negative connotation. I just wanted to address that the "hand poured" claim was more than just a big corporate marketing scheme and that the price is an undervalue for the quality of the product. I also got a response from JB camera design saying that they are working on a tripod screw and will keep me posted.

Below are photos of the Horusbennu half case.
First photo, looks like a great case.

    DSCF5864

Second photo, looks like it was painted by a kid in a sweat shop. They need to get more skillful kids. Chocolate cake?
    DSCF5865

Third photo, the case adds a whole 1cm to the size of your camera. That was the dealbreaker for me.

nice to hear that they are working on an improved version. might consider to get one later. :)

again, thanks for the effort to share your findings here. =D>

This is actually the only case I would consider buying. I'm familiar with the material, my boots are very similar. However, the lensmate thumb grip has my cash first.

and i think the 1cm extra is down to the tripod screw with loops for a strap and thread for a tripod

  • @lsl1994, thanks!

@p3t3or, must be some nice boots. I'm saving my money now for a X Pro1. Might take awhile.

@mattmaber, does your Horusbennu case look like that too? Or did i just get a lemon? I honestly thought it would be the perfect case for me considering the features and price. I know the extra cm is for the screw, but I think the Gariz is a better/slimmer solution. Too bad that case is $130. That's some X Pro1 savings right there.

its a little shabby if i inspect it, but for the price Im not complaining. its MUCH cheaper than the gariz and I like the open back

  • Same here. I ordered both the jb and horus to try out, just like the jb one better. Now I'm using an old tripod adapter screw on it with the loop. Makes it easier to take on/off without the need for a coin. And I can attach something to it, not sure what yet. Maybe a lens cap on a string?

@purethanol fair enough. im just not sure Id like the rubber/plastic of the JB (tho I like the principle of it) some rubberised/silicony cases just feel a bit weird in my hands.

  • @mattmaber yeah i agree. The material is definitely something you would have to feel first to know whether or not you'll like it. Not like leather or synthetic leather, which are easier to guess. In a way it's a little risk and it might not be for everybody. But I would just return it if that's the case. I thought I would actually be returning the JB case instead of the Horus because I'm not a fan of plastic or silicon but I ended up liking it.

@p3t3or the bottom of the boot does look like the same material. haha. I actually have my eye on this thumb grip. I wanted one that will still allow me to attach my ef20.

even the flash will fire, there will not be TTL for EF20.
  • Oh damn it. Good to know. I would have been sorely disappointed if I had bought it. You guys just saved me $50. Thanks! Does this go for the Thumbs Up grip as well? The hot shoe looks the same.

@lsl7994 so it will fire the flash? I had been led to understand it wouldn't. Are you sure?

@purethanol I asked about it on here and was told no thumbs up are about that will fire the flash. could be wrong tho. if its not ttl thats fine, I use an ebay cheapee wireless trigger and receiver.

@purethanol ah maybe. the ebay page doesn't mention flash working.

  • I guess it's just for decoration then. That's really dumb, I just assumed that the flash would work.

Well you'll be able to use it for other coldshoe things like a bubble level but I'm not sure i see the point
my thumb grip doesn't have the shoe on it. I just take mine off if i use the flash. its a bit annoying but nothing major.

that's right. what i meant is even if it can flash, ttl will not work. that defeats the purpose of having EF20/42. maybe you can put a remote trigger on that and use a 3rd party flash. :)

I wonder if a message to the ebay seller will work. Im suspicious that it doesn't mention the flash working through it in the blurb. You'd have thought it'd be important to say.

  • I have the JB Camera Design case and it's great. Like some of the reviews I read it does have a little flex on each side of the case which makes the case feel loose. All I did was take was use some of the blue tac non-marring adhesive (from Staples) and put a very small piece on each side of the case and now the case feels as solid as a rock with no flex and I can easily take the case off and put on the tripod. The blue tac adds just enough friction and is non-marring. When you put the case back on just give it a squeeze and you're done: super solid again.
  • Question for JB case owners. Does it feel tacky (not stylishly tacky) but touching it does it feel like there is a slight film or stickiness at all? I'm considering this case for a camera I just ordered, it seems a good product with the practicality I like, especially the access to battery/sd card. I have a gariz for my X10 which I feel is an excellent product, but am willing to keep an open mind so that my budget goes further.
    Thank you

not tacky at all. I wish the right side were more rigid, but that's mostly a problem caused by the card opening/lens gap/screen placement. Overall a very good & practical product at what seems a relatively reasonable price for something not mass produced.
  • thanks for the quick response biscuit. I think I'll try the JB then. I was worried it might feel similar to the silicon bake ware. I saw that JB is coming out with a brown color as well available Jan 31.

chemically smelly at first, however, due to the freshness of the casting, but they are very upfront about that and it passes off within a few days. I went with the black, but I'm a classic-look kind of guy.
  • I agree with biscuit. It has a nice tactile feel to it but not sticky. Mine didn't have any smell but that might depend on how "fresh" your case is? I'm shooting with an OMD now and I have a Gariz case for it. Overall I'm pretty happy with the case due to the quality but JB recently made a grip for the OMD as well. If it was released sooner I might have gone with that due to price and ergonomics. I'm glad these cases are gaining business though since I'm sure I will buy another JB product in the future.
  • I may end up getting the black, since I can't be sure of the brown hue. I would like a slight burgundy brown color actually. lol
  • Well, my mouse hoovered between the black and the brown case, but in the end I decided I would try the JB brown grip. It isn't so expensive that I can't order the black case down the road if I decide to go more classic. Will post my thoughts once the camera and case arrive. Looks like they are producing a new batch since the status was pre-order for either color and ship date Jan 29th.
  • I received the JB brown case on Friday. I am happy with the fit and finish. The texture of the grip feels fine in my hand as well. There was a slight odor out of the packaging, but I haven't noticed it since.

One problem that I did not anticipate, the Black Rapid lanyard screw does not have enough depth to screw into the bottom of this new case. I'll have to see if I can find a suitable screw. So, Gariz definitely gets high marks for having the separate metal tripod mount screw available on the bottom, but cost wise these 2 different half cases are so far apart that this is just a minor inconvenience.
