Its also a far more 'consumery' camera and those people aren't forum geeks, they have lives.

What hating are you talking about? Are you hallucinating? Are you bipolar?

I asked a simple question. All the X series cameras have generated a lot of talk and activity. X-cept one, the X-S1. It is clearly the least popular of all the cameras out of the X series.

If you cannot handle this question, then why do you bother responding?

Even 5 months before it became available, Fuji managers told me that the X-S1 will not be vey popular in Europe and Norh America. So this was basically planned and doesn't come as a surprise. There's almost no market for premium bridge cameas with larger sensors. The X-S1 literally is the last man standing.

FinePixCamera maybe from your perspective he meant you are looking for trouble.

However from what I read, it was a general comment not to despise the X-S1.

    Move on guys.

And I have to agree. It is a niche camera. It is a bridge camera no matter how they try to hide that fact using the X moniker. I would say this camera is in the wrong place. Not because it is a bad camera but 'X' is really for quality cameras and bridge consistently don't perform as well as the x10 as standard.

I must admit I'm surprised about the zero comments from X-S1 users here especially as it was promoted as some sort of X10 on steroids.

Me too. Very surprised, especially as the HS10/20 were pretty popular. That's why I asked the question in my post. I dont know what the super paranoid like matt have going through their head.

I guess Fuji went too high on price with the X-S1.

I'm looking for more camera range - telephoto wise. The X-S1 is interesting! Things are on hold while the non-com-poops sort out the issues with the X10. I haven't seen enough information and photos to judge the cameras potential. The HS-30 is interesting as well.

It does seem misplaced in the X series, both by its design and intent. That said, it seems a good snapper if you're into that sort of machine.

The low fling aircraft are mainly helicopters and they're generally well under 500'. Easy shot for most any camera.

We live on a major flyway for migrating birds of all kinds. Our bird population ranges from Road Runners to Bald Eagles. I'd like to start getting some photos of them.

No one ever mentions this camera's external mic jack. Sound is the downfall of many of these little cameras. While I use 5D and Mark IV cameras for stills and video at work, the video files are way too big to wifi back on deadline. For that reason I carry a little Lumix FZ series to eye-fi to my phone to feed the web and keep shooting. The SX1 with a shotgun or wireless would give me good sound and smaller files. Now if I could just get work to buy me one :) If you wanted to buy one camera for the office to shoot stills and video, I could see this being a contender.

  • Hello Group,
Just this week I acquired (yet) another Fujicam, the XS-1. It is my opinion that these EXr cams are geared for producing consumer friendly shots in the EXR jpeg mode, mostly. I have made some RAW shots with it, and it seems similar in that respect to some of their other bridge offereings. But then, I don't claim to know what I'm talking about.
Is there a photo post method attached to this site, or am I just "ignant"?

You need to have the photo hosted somewhere on the Internet (your own site, Flickr, Picassa, Photobucket or where ever then link to it). Have a read of the "Articles and user guides" link that is over on the right of your screen.

  • Thanks, Kiwi. I'll play around with this X-10 shot from my site;;;;

    Dave,
I didn't see any problems with your train photos! I'm a sucker for train pictures in general, and yours looked fine to me.

I'm probably going to pick up an X-S1 in few months. So how's it working out for you?

I don't shoot RAW. I'm rather new to the digital camera deal, so just simply never got into processing RAW images. The few times I tinkered with RAW the results didn't seem any better than Fuji's JPEG, and I didn't need to sit at the computer any longer than it took to dump the pictures from the camera! :-)

Shoot a bunch of photos and post them. I'd like to see what the camera is capable of doing!
  • Like you, Will, I enjoy the RR stuff. We rode the trains from up state NY to TN in the 50's and 60's. Only freighters run here now. Have to go to Nashville or Chattanooga to ride an excursion.
For train's sake, here's a link to some recent posting I did of an CSX, aout a mile's worth of cargo:
    http://www.camera-enthusiast.com/forums/threads/railroads.3154/page-3
I shot this with a Fuji s200 exr. That unit doesn't use a CMOS sensor. Note image #3, as I was shooting raw, I improperly set the exposure too high, blowing out the highlights and having to try to salvage it in post.
Now, the EXR is optimized to shot jpegs so that, as you noted, there is little need to post process. The red locomotive shot with the X-10, however, needed some drama, so I went into Aseedsee#5 and bent the light to make the clouds stand out more. I wasn't getting that from the camera, and that is likely to my inexperience with the S sensors. (Funny, in the late 1980's, video cameras mostly used CMOS, but the drain was so significant on battery life, they went ot CCD. Now, the engineers have returned to CMOS.)
I am still getting used to the XS-1, and will try to post some less than shoddy shots later this weekend.

    Dave,

You're miles ahead of me regarding digital photo processing. I merely wandered in from 35mm film recently.

Your photos look great! I managed to photograph the Challenger when it came through here several years ago. Sadly the whole deal is on film and not digitized. Now I content my self by building model live steam locomotives.

Looking forward to viewing your work with the X-S1. :-) I haven't enlarged anything larger than 8 x 10 in years and that's not likely to change. The X10 is great, I take it with me daily. The X-S1 appeals me for wildlife and such. Missed a nice shot of a Red Fox the other day because I just didn't have telephoto capabilities.
  • Will,

I went to Yahoo and looked at all your posted shots there. REALLY enjoyed them! I like your POV's. As for the XS-1, I do intend to learn this camera, since it's a modern version of the S100FD which I so enjoyed shooting with several years ago. My primary toy is, however, a Pentax K-7. Boy, do I love your Rail Road!

I shot a Canon A1 for 20+ years! Stopped doing much photography in 2000. Picked up a little cheapo Canon digital and just piddled around with it until power zoom craped put. Bought the X10 and love it! Was looking at the Pentax kr with a 70-300mm lens or Fuji X-S1.

The Fuji has the edge at the moment. I do like the look of the photos I get with the X10. I don't need a large sensor camera. All I want to do is shoot birds and some wildlife now and again. I only make 8X10's so might as well be realistic! :-)

The X-S1 is the most popular X-camera in several "normal" Fuji discussion forums. It's more popular than the X10 and way, way, way more popular than the X100 or XP1. It's simple: Different forums attract different users. Dedicated X forums attract photographers with a faible for puristic retro style cameras. All these forums started out as X100 forums, remember? Hence, their users like Leica (that's why we have those ridiculous Leica comparisons every day) and other rangefinders, other users come from a full-frame DSLR background and use their Fuji X as an add-on camera.

OTOH, general Fuji forum users come from a P&S and bridge camera background, they like all-in-one cameras and they wonder if they should get the new HS30EXR or the S-X1.There are plenty of threads about this. Believe it or not, but Fuji offers and sells(!) dozens of different camera models, not just the X series. And yes, people are discussing these cameras, just not here. Being a bridge camera, the X-S1 is discussed where Fuji's other bridge camera offerings are discussed, as well. Go figure!

Since I am a P&S guy myself, I know about such "things". So trust me, the X-S1 is a pretty popular topic of discussion. Just not here. Here, we need to talk about "rangefinders", about "M adapters" and why Fuji oh so urgently needs to release a full-frame XP2.

The X-S1 simply doesn't fit into the retro style (or cliché) that's predominant in all X forums. Look here: http://www.x100forum.com/. Just a retro X100. Or here: http://www.fuji-x100-forum.de. Another X100. That's how all these forums started, after all. The "X100" URLs still work, even though all these forums have evolved from "X100 forums" to more general "X forums".

I was leaning toward the XS-1, decided to go with Pentax K-5.
    Reasons?:

I have a microscope and telescope with Pentax K mount adapters. Opens lots of possibilities.

I have two very nice Tamron Adaptall 2 lens that are easily converted to Pentax. A 35-135mm and 70-210mm lenses. I know these lenses and the K-5 handles them nicely. Besides their used sale value is nil. Might as well use them!

A weather sealed camera is almost a requirement for out door photography, IMO.

The Pentax K-5 has been around for sometime with a good reputation.

Current price drop of the Pentax K-5 made it attractive.

The XS-1 can do everything the K-5 can do without question; however, I get more photographic options with the K-5.

Everyone's situation is different. MY X10/K-5 combination, for a hobby photographer, is very nice.

My personal recommendation to all owners of older X-S1 models would be to have the camera replaced for free by Fuji under their current WDS fixing scheme. This procedure not only cures WDS, it also gets the X-S1 an improved lens which, I think, will result in better overall image quality. It will also take care of any "blue dot" issues. So basically, you get a brand new camera.

That said, I am still using my old WDS-ridden, blue dotting X-S1 with quite decent results. But now that I've finished my XP1 book and a bit more time on my hands, I'll also look to have it replaced.
  • I love the Fuji X series. I started off with the X10, beautiful camera, then couldnt resist the X100 when they dropped the price by £300, to fund the X100, sold the X10. The craftmanship, lens, everything oozes class. I have been sitting on the fence for awhile since then, pondering the XS1, was really put off by negative reviews and little positive praise for this beast. Anyway negativity aside, I decided to go for it and cant tell you how pleased I am taking that leap of faith. I think the reason for it being the least popular of the four is that it is a bridge camera and thats not what every photographer would want in their kit bag. I am impressed, pleased, overjoyed with the results that I am getting from the camera.
  • Hi All,

Never under estimate the capabilities of an X-S1. I just love the camera. You can compare the features to that of an advanced DSLR like EOS 5D mk-iii for which you will have to drill a whole hole in your pocket. I am not a pro in photography, but i review gadgets seriously. I was planning to buy the Sony DSC HX200V, but the image quality and customization capabilities were a great turn off for me. The X-S1 gives usable pictures at 100 % crop where as the sony had a lot of detail smudging and they call in Noise Reduction. The Super Macro is delicious and the telephoto even at 1248 mm(virtual) i.e 624mm optical + 2x super intelligent zoom, images were crystal clear with no loss of detail...the blooming effect is a lot better after the firmware upgrade..

I recommend the camera for all, a friend of mine with a 550d was driven mad seeing the "kickass" features offered by the X-S1, the result was awesome..
  • Hi,

I would like to know how the X-S1 can be focused to infinity. It will be of great help to me in shooting at night.
