Fuji X10 Filter - Here IS the solution - I have it and it works perfectly...

I have a Fuji X10, and wanted to be certain in protecting that great lens... understanding thet the Fuji "kit" filter adapter forces a 52mm filter as well as creating a further issue with dust getting in between the lens and filter via the three vents in the adapter itself. I looked long and hard to come to a solution for this. The inside threading of the x10 is 40.3mm. Here is the solution, wherein you end up with a filter assembly that maintains the profile of the lens and filter as uniform, and looks exactly how Fuji "should have" designed the same.

Visit eBay - search for either 40mm step up ring and/or the eBay Seller "Heavystar"... you will find a 40mm to 40.5mm step up ring (0r a 40mm to 46mm of the same)... for 7 bucks order one of these.
Now purchase locally or via eBay a 40.5mm filter - I would suggest a "low profile" or "thin" model (I use a Hoya multi-coated) to be certain there is no vignetting at the wide open end of the lens.

The step-up ring will thread on entirely.. no forcing, if you are an "a-type" like me use a bit of teflon tape and it will be 100%. Now thread on your 40.5 mil. Filter and voila... looks and functions as though Fuji designed it as they should have.

Cheers, let me know your thoughts, enjoy the x10, I have owned many cameras, full, c, 4/3's, compacts... this is a great camera all around.

Anyone having any experience with this one; 40mm Pro1 Slim Glass MC UV Filter? Does not appear to be double-threaded, but quite slim and eBay sellers seem to be quite aware that fitting a filter on the X10 is critical.

Cheap (maybe in more than one way), but could do the trick in those situations where I prefer to have some protection mounted...

That's the one I have and it is double threaded and fits like a dream and does the job..

...and just to follow up on my posting, I got mine in a bundle with a LH-X10 lens hood for GBP 29,- :

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320861208172

Perfect fit - not just close, but exact fit! Slim and you can still use the Fujifilm lens cap.

Should anyone ask me, this is the filter/hood combo to buy.

    Hi all,

I just got the JJC lens hood and the B + W UV filter:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Filter-52mm-Multi-Resistant-Coating/dp/B0000BZL47/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334911463&sr=8-1

Can someone tell me how much of the OVF I can expect to be blocked? Will it still be usable?

    Thanks, Friso

Could have pointed out that "...you will get used to it...", but pictures better explain this. Looking out my window through the OVF at 28 mm and 122 mm with the above 40 mm filter and hood mounted, this is what I see - hope this helps setting your expectations.

Fujifilm X10 with hood at 28 mm and 112 mm...

40mm filter fits perfectly - no problem. Fujifilm lens cap still fits. Purchased from eBay a new 40mm UV filter. Threads on to the lens with the same amount of turns as a filter does on my DSLR's. Purchased from eBay seller ROXSEN http://stores.ebay.ca/ROXSEN Very good quality filter.

    Bill -

Do you have a part number for the filter I can enter into the ROXSEN store site? I can not find it via the link.

(scroll down to "Marumi 40mm Camera Filters")

Since I'm also in NH, I'm hoping I'll get receive it in a few days. I'll post an update when it arrives.

I have it, you'll love it. The filter fits perfectly. The threading is a perfect match. The original lens cap fits perfectly as well ... albeit just a tad looser since it makes less contact with the knurled portion of the lens below.

My only quibble is that they're not the quickest on shipping so be patient! It's worth the wait. :)

I too have the Marumi 40mm filter and it fits perfectly. The great feature of this camera is that it is pocketable -ok jacket pocket - and still is with this filter and lens cap.

I would like to increase the versatility of this camera if possible with a screw-in tele converter. Does anyone have any suggestions?

VictorZ: I agree. It arrived today and it's a perfect fit. The lens cap is a little looser with the filter on, but it's worth the tradeoff for the extra protection. Shipping was fast for me (I'm also in NH).

I've just purchased a Camdiox Pro1-D Super Slim MC UV 40mm filter here in Hong Kong today at HK$95.- (around US$12.-). It fits the X10 well and lens cap fits too.

I can also recommend the fit and quality of the Roxsen filter on the X10; works perfectly.

I tried the Heavystar extension and hood but the OVF was obstructed too much for my liking. I now use only the Roxsen and no hood.

The only issue is that the stock Fuji cap sits a bit out and more easily comes off but not on its own. I plan on attaching a string with tape to it sside and then run the string through the strap ring so it doesn't fall off.

I've been thinking for some time which filter to pick up.
Since im in Denmark, just found this youtube video from a Danish online retailer demonstrating there UV filter on the X10 and with the ability to attach the lens hood if need be.

    Video:

Im guessing its this filter, but i'll ask them:

I got myself one of the step up rings drom Heavystar and it works a treat and with fast delivery to the UK. Unfortunaltly I paired this witha Kood 40.5 mm polariser and the vignetting is horrific, shoots look like they were with a fish eye. Anybody got any experience with a polariser that has no or minimal vignetting? Thanks.

Just got a 40mm Marumi as well (thx for the 2filter.com tip dan42).

BTW 2filter.com mentions they are working on sourcing a 40mm CPL, that would be cool.

And must i say the glare is minimal on this baby. my friend and I tested it directly shooting against the sun. some 52mm filter produces bad glare when using the step up filter.

Yep very good filter. Just shoot a solid white shot with and without filter to see if it is a neutral color shift.
  • Hi - I'm looking for a Polarizing filter and found this one. Will this work in combination with the lens hood adaptor mentioned by Friso above ..?
  • FrisoVFrisoV
    Posts: 19
@zerozero31 yes should work. Any 52mm filter will fit the adaptor. The hood can also be screwed to the adaptor
  • @frisoV - thanks for the confirmation. Thinking aloud, I'm just wondering now how a polarizing filter will work with the lenshood on as you need to be able to turn the filter according to the conditions. Clearly that's not going to be possible ..

You're right. The hood would block your easy access to the filter. You could leave the hood off for easier operation.

I had been using the Marumi MC-UV filter as well but couldn't shake the feeling that it took away from the lens unlike B+W filters I own for my other gear (maybe reading all about the quality issues in previous threads brainwashed me). So I got the heavystar 40-46mm step and used an existing B+W. I think there is a difference plus I think the step-up makes the camera look better withe the clean, matching diameter. And I can use my existing ND & IR filters!!

I would not want to change filters, nor to fit a hood (image obscuration). Does anyone have any experience of using the ACMAXX Lens Armor UV Filter that can be simply stuck onto the lens rim ? Your thoughts welcome. Thank you. PS I've heard good reports on the 40mm NiSi UV lens filter

No experience with "ACMAXX Lens Armor UV Filter" ... but why would you want to spend more money than it would cost to buy the Marumi filter just to get something that precludes ever using a hood, an adapter for other filters, etc. The ACMAXX covers the filter threads thus making them unusable ... or at the very least, a PIA to make use of.

I've got the Marumi, I love it ... works great, it doesn't create any obvious issues with visible flare or contrast reduction, it allows the original lens cap to be used, it allows a hood to be screwed on if desired, etc. That said, I don't have it on the camera "all of the time" insofar as modern lens coatings are pretty damn tough and unless I know I'll be in gritty, dirty, watery environments - at the beach or lakeside, on a boat, etc. are good examples of such - then I don't see the need to put more glass in front of the lens. I've got the filter in the pocket of the case, easy-peasy to put on if needed, but in most situations, I'd just assume leave the lens as the engineers designed it. Though as I said above, I don't see any OBVIOUS issues, at a pixel level, I suspect ANY filter is going to degrade the image. Maybe only a TEENY bit, but "teeny" is non-zero. The X10 has an excellent lens, why degrade it, even if only a little bit?

Anyhoot ... just my opinion. Yours will undoubtedly vary and is no less valid.
  • So I just got the lenshood and filter. The polarizer (I've always used them, so ..) works fine and it is possible to turn it even with the full lenshood assembly on, but the issue I've discovered is that when using the flash, the flashlight reflects off the hood and produces a rather nasty over-exposed top-left hand corner of the final image.

i dont think there is an available polarizer filter with the native size of 39.5 or 40 mm. you need to add the fuji step up ring adapter and put on any 52 mm filter. Suggest to put something to cover the open slots in the adapter.
  • @md_eric - no need for any of that, I got the lens adaptor mentioned in FrisoV's post above (this one). The polarizer filter just screws into it. Works great so it does.

I know this is a few days late but a 40.5mm filter I brought in error wouldn't fit.Who would have thought half a mm would make a difference.

I knew it'd be wishful thinking. Have heard of 40.5mm filters running small though.
Went for the ebay special 40mm uv in stead. Still want an ND filter without out having to step up to a 52mm though.
Heavystar doesn't seem to have the 40-40.5mm step up rings anymore.
  • I have a 49mm variable ND filter on a step up ring doesnt look too out of place, the camera will still sit on a flat surface ok.
