Would like to buy used X-100 but not a sticky shutter version, advice needed.

So I see my online camera store has a used x-100 for about $850. I am very tempted but concerned I may get one that has sticky shutter blades. Does anyone know if there was a serial number range that had this issue? Or cost for out of warranty repair?

From past discussions, I would not trust any serial number range as being safe. Also, the repair cost for this camera (if I recall correctly) is about $750! It's a whole new lens block.

However, often camera shops will sell there own second hand warranty, or it might be worth contacting Fuji to see if they would offer a warranty. My advice would be not to buy a second hand one without some kind of assurance like that.

I have had an X100 give up with the shutter blades twice - the second replacement lens block which failed resulted in a replacement camera (my camera shop and Fuji really came good for me here)!

EDIT - what's the best price you can get a new one for? A quick search brings up a new one at £569.95 here in the UK, how does this compare to your dollars?

Fujifilm has given NO information of any kind about the sticky aperture blades so you cannot make an informed decision.

    Fujifilm Gear: F10, F20, F70EXR, XF1, X10, X100 (w/ Fujinon WCL-X100), S5 Pro, (w/Nikkor 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.8, and 50mm f/1.2 lenses), Fujifilm GA645

And a freezer full of Fuji Neopan Acros and 400H film.

Clearly someone who hates Fujifilm and their products.

Find out from Fuji what their stance is on it and go from there, if Fuji dont cover it, ask the store.

@X_Lover - I think you will struggle to find anyone on this forum to say go for it with the second have camera with no warranty of some kind. Fuji support is excellent, but that's only available to you if you buy the camera from new, and there are lots on here who have had to use the support!!

"...there are lots on here who have had to use the support!!"

And lots who have not. Take Matt's advice and contact Fuji directly. If you do, report back here.

@pcg - yep, fair enough! If Fuji were to give a warranty or some kind of assurance and the cost was right, then why not.

@X_Lover - did you get hold of Fuji? What was the outcome?

As far as I'm concerned, I was really bothered by the SAP, but decided to take the plunge. I don't regret it. If the camera was to fail me now, no problem, I would return it and have it fixed or exchanged, but the X100 IQ is such that I'm not afraid by the possibility of mine failing me.

My first X100 did the SAB thing after just one month. I was able to exchange it at the store where I purchased it. At the time I really just wanted my money back having heard so many issues with reoccurring SAB. In the end, I'm glad I exchanged it.

Than again, if SAB manifests itself while I'm on vacation this summer I'm going to be really pissed because I intend to leave the digital SLR and it's 10 pound bag of "gear" at home.

If the X100 wasn't such an awesome camera in every other respect I'd declare it a looser just because of the SAB issue.

So, I wouldn't buy a used one unless I could get it for half the cost of a new one. This way you could justify paying for the repair if SAB rears it's head. I understand the repair cost is a little more than half the price of the camera. 2 cents.

If you buy new in the UK you get the free 2 year platinum warranty. Worth paying a little bit more, I think.

SAB is a manufacture related problem and is well known and very documented. If Fuji did not fix every consumer department in the world world have them in court so quick. Fuji is luckiy they have not been forced to do full product recall and they will do anything t keep things that way.

All true but it still doesn't address the lack of warranty if you buy a used X100. Fuji has no obligations on that score. So, I'm not sure this would fall under the "do anything to keep from having to do a full product recall."

So long as you buy a used X100 that has the original sales receipt you'll have no problem. I still have mine to give with the camera if I ever decide to sell.

@kevenv - actually I read a post about a guy who bought a second hand X100 which developed the SAB issue. Fuji would not honer the warranty other than with the original purchase. He ended up having to ask the seller to do the warranty stuff by sending him the camera back and was fortunate as Fuji had quoted him $750! Not a risk I would personally take!

    Hence my original reply.

I too have read reports online of people that had no problems because they had the original receipt as well as one case where no receipt was available and Fuji still fixed it under warranty. Perhaps an email to Fuji would clarify what will work and what won't before buying.

Edited to add: Fuji seems to have different answers depending on the country. So a quick email to YOUR Fuji seems to be in order.

Agreed - the only sensible thing to do is contact Fuji and put your mind at rest with whatever response they give. However @X_Lover seems to have disappeared from this thread :-) I wander what his decision was?
