Issue when transferring pictures from X10 to iPad

Has anyone else experienced a problem with their X10 after transferring pictures to an iPad? Following the transfer of pictures to an iPad 2 or new iPad (3rd gen) via the SD Card Reader in Apple’s iPad Camera Connection Kit, the card has to be reformatted by the camera to get it to work properly. Not reformatting impacts the X10’s ability to turn on and off when turning the Zoom ring. Sometimes the indicator lamp just blinks (amber) and the camera turns on after approximately 20 seconds or does not turn on at all. In Playback mode, it also takes about 20 seconds before the camera monitor (display) comes up. Once in Live or Playback mode the camera seems to operator normally and can switch back and forth. Although the issue is not completely debilitating – it limits my ability to back up and edit pictures on my iPad when traveling and severely impacts the camera’s ability to ready for a shot. My X10 has firmware Ver. 1.03 and both iPads are running iOS 5.1.1 – the latest available. I am also bringing this issue to the attention of FUJIFILM and Apple and will post any feedback I receive to this site.

Yes, its a known issue. If you flick the lock switch before putting the card into the iPad and then remember to unlock it before putting it back in the camera, there will be no start up issues.

It's because the iPad writes some files to the card and this messes with the X10's head.

The same thing happen when using card or USB stick with Macs and then putting back in a camera or Windows PC.

    Rog,
say that again please?? I am having all manner of issues with the SD cards, in a Mac. CF (from a Sony DSLR), no issues, none at all.
The SD cards though, my god, annoying is a polite way to put it.
You are saying (or the previous posters are) that by "locking" the card will help? By "locking" does it mean to slide across the little "switch" on the card, correct?
I've tried a new card reader, and sworn profusely, to no avail.

No problems here either. Using iMac with 10.7.4 OS and iPad 3. Zero issues!

Is known issue with use of USB and SD cards between Mac and Windows. If USB or card not ejected from Mac properly then often will not work proper in windows machine until reformat has happend.
If user do proper ejecting from Mac and not just remove than issue ususlly do not happen.

Also had the problem the OP describes with sd card in iPad. Locking the sd card works perfectly!
  • Thanks for posting this - I had a torrid time on holiday with X10 and X100 after downloading pics to the iPad. Wish I'd seen it before I left! 10 sec startup for an opportunistic shot = zero results.

Apparently there is a way -- I have seen it posted, but do not remember the details -- to turn something off in the Mac (and presumably the iPad) which in turn keeps it from writing anything to the card. So there seems to be a solution out there better than write-protecting the card (which means that sooner or later you'll forget to flip the switch back when returning the card to the camera, and you can bet that it will be just about then that a squadron of UFOs fly over, or a Sasquatch, or Elvis, appears.)

I just down loaded selected photos from by Fuji X10 and Pentax K-5 to my iPad 3 without a single hick-up. Are you folks deleting the images after loading or doing some editing? Both cameras worked fine after downloading and I didn't write protect either of the cards. I only download photos, nothing else, so the iPad performs no function other than reading the disk.
  • Yup - just downloading. No deleting or loading. I'm going to do some research on depscribe's suggestion above and will post if I find anything.

The easy and best way is just to format card in camera after pictures taken off to ipad or computer. it always better if card foramtted regularly as it improve write performance when taking photo. No need to worry with switch just transfer images, confirm transfer okay put card back in camera format then shoot. Format only takes 2 seconds. If you not sure about whether pictures transfer okay then use two or more card and rotate so last card walways still have last images on.

    from a dpreview discussion:

Reformatting would probably be a better solution since transferring files directly from the camera is usually much slower than using a card reader. But wouldn't changing the write-protect switch position on the SD card prevent Spotlight from trying to add its index files to the card? There are other ways to temporarily disable Spotlight but they may be difficult for many photographers to accomplish. A slightly simpler method can be used to more permanently disable Spotlight.

Run ParagonNTFS on your Mac and you'll not get issues when using media / USB hard drives under both OS X and Winblows. As for the SD card straight from X10 into iPad and back, I can't replicate the issue at all?
  • I have downloaded several jpeg and raw files using the iPad camera kit and the x10 cable that came with it with no issues. I use iPhoto to download all the files and have no issues.
  • Macs write hidden files all over the place. Usually it's no problem but for some reason Fuji cameras don't like them. There are a few ways to deal with it but the easiest is to regularly format the card in camera. I don't think it's necessary to do it every time (at least not for me with the X100) but YMMV.
  • FWIW, I wrote somewhere else that the lock switch trick didn't work with the iPad as it refused to import the photos from the card with the lock. I received a clear iOS alert when tried so.
That was about a week ago.
I then tried again yesterday several times and it didn't occur. Locking the switch effectively prevents the issue. You just have to remember to unlock the switch, but the camera alerts you anyway.

Very useful thread! I had the exact same thing happen as the OP described on a recent trip. X10 was very slow to turn on after my first day. I never even considered transferring files to my iPad might have anything to do with it. And I did not want to format my cards until I returned home and could download them to my computer. Upon returning home, and after downloading my cards and reformatting them in the X10 my camera is back to it's usual speedy start up. Until reading this thread I was still considering sending the camera in to Fuji to have it checked out. Now I do not think it is necessary.

This formatting software can be useful as some computers don't manage it as well as expected

  • Yep, just purchased the iPad/iPhone camera kit. After transferring images to the iPad, it took about 10 seconds start up. Reformat and now about <2 seconds.
  • not had a problem with mine :)

Although mine is a cheap ebay camera connection kit

Zero issues using my Ipad3. I wonder if the problem is related to different types of cards?
  • Has anyone tried using the USB connection?
