Thumbs Up EP-7S

I received the Thumbs Up EP-7S for my X-Pro1 today.

First an assurance, I have no affiliation with Match Technical, I am merely a three times over satisfied customer.

Excellent! I have used a TU on my X100 and my M9. In both of those cases the TU provided greater stability and a better grip. In the case of the X-Pro1 / EP-7S it does both of the above and additionally it keeps me from inadvertently depressing the "Q" or the "AE-L/AF-L" buttons.

I had been concerned with two potential issues:

    1) the Thumbs Up limiting access to the View button and Command Dial or obscuring the indicator LED

    2) due to the requisite height above the camera body and the required length from the hot shoe, I was concerned that the TU would not be rigid enough to securely transfer pressure/weight from my thumb

I should have known better. The EP-7S Thumbs Up sits snugly in the hot shoe and has 3 rubberized points of contact with the camera body. It allows firm control of the camera body and an excellent hand placement which allows access to the controls without hinderance.

The design of the EP-7S and engineering to carry it out were meticulously conceived and executed. The fit and finish are superb.

That's awesome! I was just about to post about the new TU being available. Popflash in California has them for sale on eBay for $128: http://www.ebay.com/itm/THUMBS-UP-EP-7S-BLACK-NEW-DESIGNED-FOR-FUJI-X-PRO-1-/190697251174

I've been waiting for that! It's cool that someone reviews it even before I know it's released! haha

Thanks for that, I'll try to get myself one in europe.

I ordered mine the first day available, and received it yesterday. It performs as expected, but my one concern is ability to work the shutter dial effectively. Has that been an issue for you?

With my X100's Thumbsup, I learned to change the shutter speed dial with my index finger instead of my thumb. It just takes a little getting used to :)

  • Does anyone know where to find it in Europe?
  • Matteo, having drawn a blank here in the UK, I tried both German and the French suppliers but neither could (yet) supply one. So I wrote to Match Technical and Tim Isaac there was very helpful. He said (this was 3 days ago) that "I have just begun shipping EP-7S to my European dealers. So I am not surprised you cannot locate one yet." He then offered to send me one direct, which he did after submitting a PayPal invoice at my request, and the TU is on its way. But it sounds like you should be able to buy one from a European dealer soon.
  • Did the same think. Should get it in a few days.
    Thanks!

Got mine a week ago, great little thing, no more hitting the Q-button. Bought directly from Tim Isaac, very helpful and fast shipping.

    Hello,
If someone want to buy it from Europe, you still can visit suppliers link of Match Technical Services official website : http://www.matchtechnical.com/Pages/dealers.aspx & check it from european dealers.
    Have a good day.

I really would like one, but I'm having difficulty justifying the cost. How is everyone liking their EP-7S's?

  • It does cost a lot but I find it really useful. Together with the Fuji grip it delivers a best-in-class handling performance. Definitely a must have ..

For my X100, I had a LensMate thumb rest, which costs $59.95. How on earth can Match Technical justify $139 ???

Unfortunately Lensmate only support the X10 and the X100 :( Anyone seen anything else for the X-PRO1?

Aside from the outrageous cost of the thumbs-up, I personally think the lensmate is better. Having large hands/long fingers, I prefer a thumb-rest moved in from the outer edge of the camera, resulting in less cramping of the palm.

    a thumb-rest for the X100 is a must-have.
  • Used a lensmate for a while but prefer my X100 without it so it sure ain't no 'must have' for me.

tell me, how do you hold it so as to keep your thumb from messing with all the various control surfaces that are otherwise directly under it?

I find the XP is difficult to hold as you inadvertantly press on either the Q or the AF-Lock buttons. What is even more annoying is that when I DO want to press the AF-Lock, I get the Q button instead!

The thumb rest might prevent accidental pressing, but I wonder if it is helping to press the desired button whilst holding the camera to your eye. Possibly, because you have a tactile feedback to the thumb rest. Perhaps someone who has one could comment.

(I wish that Lens Mate would come out with their version. I've emailed them, but no response so far).
  • did you receive an email from LensMate back already?
Dont want to pay so much money for a thumbrest like the EP 7S
  • lens mate are taking orders now, ordered mine today
  • nice, can you tell how the handling is when you receive it?
price seems to be better :) (still quite expensive :O )

Someone in the UK needs to distibute these (both Lens Mate and the Thumbs Up!) - I always get stung for duty.
Does anyone know if there is a dealer that has either of these in the UK?

  • @franco I bought a soft release button from them (same brand as thumbs up) and everything was fine. I tried to get the xpro1 thumbs up but they hadn't it in stock at that time and I ordered it directly from the manufacturer (excellent customer service). Btw the thumbs up is the best camera accessory I have ever tried. I got rid of Fuji grip, could not handle my Fuji without it now.

I've the same thumbs up and I love it :)
He's a very kind seller, I received an answer in less than 1 minute, I paid and 5 minutes later I received the USPS tracking code. 4 days after I had my thumbs up (in Switzerland) :)
  • @marco, Swiss post office is better then that in the UK! I collected my Thumbs Up from a local post office last Friday, 31st August, but it was shipped, from US, on 6th August! It spent 10 days sitting at the 'International Hub' for some unknown reason. Bloody useless lot over here.

Still, I'm really impressed with it. It appears very well made, it fits very well and I think it's a great enhancement. No more accidental button pressing, and the camera feels much more secure in my hand.

Off on holiday next week (sailing in The Solent), I wonder what I'll find to shoot!

Any suggestions for water-proofing an X-Pro1?

  • Got mine in Amsterdam (€119,) nivo-schweitzer.nl Fit and finish are perfect.
  • PurestBlue - lash it to the mast.
  • Love mine. I like the way the paint wears off to reveal brass. It allows me to fantasize that the metal under the paint on my XP1 is brass as well :).
  • my lensmate arrived 2 days ago, it fits perfectly
  • yep, slicker than snot :D
  • Would this work with the standard leather XPro case or does it stick out to much from the back?

    Cheers

I have the Thumbs Up 5S, which is the shorter version, pretty much the same position as the LensMate, and I am looking to trade it or sell it for the 5S, the longer one. I have large hands, and I find the position to be very uncomfortable, and would like the grip closer to the edge...
