Super Trees of the Gardens by the Bay.

15 seconds, F22 (right to the end of the aperture ring), ISO (L) 100

Seen too many pictures with the colours of the super trees so when there was a lull when all the trees' lights are off, the sky and the trees merged to become a 'real' super tree with branches reaching out to the clouds like foliage of a real tree.

This has become my picture of the day and perhaps will also be the picture of the weekend and a candidate for picture of the year. Heck, even picture of a lifetime (together with my moon shot @ Alaska)

RR, well if I am the one selling the camera and one of the main reasons why people do not buy the camera is because of the lack of lens in the arsenal, what would be the logical thing to do IF there's not enough lens?

If I show the photo on top and not saying any word about the lens being used, would one just assume it would be a Fuji lens?

If one can maximise the body with any lens being matched to it, won't it say something about the x-trans sensor?

As for using Nikon lens, i would say it is not making it any worse but in some instances actually does better than the Fujinon lens in certain circumstances.

Sigma 18-50 F2.8 Macro

Am particular amazed by the clarity as one can see the texture of the flower to the point that one can see fibre coming off the petals. One don't need 36MP to do that.

HI WilzWorkz7. Thanks for the post. The Xpro-1 brochure mentions that the magnification of the viewfinder changes when the lenses are changed. Did this work when you used the Nikkor Lenses?

I have number of Nikkor & Sigma lenses for Nikon, but haven't touched them since I got the X10 and X100. Was considering the X-Pro1 but, like others, was weighing up the cost of a whole new lens collection. Your post answered a lot of questions for me. You may have ended costing me a whole lot of money in the form of a X-Pro1 body! ;)

Yes it was a delightful camera though not everyone will appreciate the slowness when handling old lens in a new digital camera but the reward is for all to see.

Yes, the G Adapters (with the silver aperture control ring) are right for older and the newer G/DX Nikkors.

Hey, for sure the X-Pro1 is a great camera.
But it is the cook who makes the meal, not the pot !

Thanks for reading. At least I got people thinking how to maximise their current set of lenses.

Just know that the adaptor ring is not the smoothest but it worked for me.

Somehow I think the Nikon/Canon engineers have lost that touch when it comes to lenses as the whole industry transited from film to digital. Part of the reason is that they adopted the DX size that has affected the overall quality of the lens. the modern 50mm is nowhere near the quality heft and the sharpness provided by the film equivalent which is basically good glass (not plastic). If they want to match it, then the cost would be very high because of auto focus.

The Kipon can improve much more. For one it can make the aperture ring a bit smoother, not as tight and maybe even some notches to help us determine at least where are the two extremes and the middle point (that would determine if the lens is at 5.6). They cannot put the aperture stops as there may be different lens being matched with the adaptor. e.g. 2.8 to 22 or 1.4 to 16.

I guess you are pretty keen on the Tokina because of the shot I have of the black and white (fake) super trees?

For adaptors, the most important things to look out for at the top of my mind
a) There must not be any free movement when the adaptor is between the lens and the body. Reason is to minimise any chance of the lens getting out of line with the sensor and reduce out-of-focus situation.
b) The aperture ring should be there so that one can have the choice of using the modern lenses on top of the old lenses. Just remember to put the adaptor aperture ring to the smallest F stop.
c) The flange distance from the back of the lens to the sensor should be same as what the adapted lens is designed for. For example the flange distance of the X series is very much shorter than conventional DSLRs so the adaptor must introduce the exact distance to ensure optimal image quality. Any shorter or longer can impede the lens performance.

That said I have not tried rainbowimaging stuff so I can't really comment.

Reason? In product description it says "This adapter is different from other Nikon-X-Pro1 adapters, its has an Aperture Control Ring, Its fits NIkon G & AF-S lenses, even the lens (that) don't have aperture control."

Just to expand the knowledge a tad:

The reason to get XE1 over the XPRO1 when it comes to adapted lens is because we would hardly use the OVF for focusing. That would be the domain of the EVF since it will be the EVF that can see what the lens see.

So to focus, this is what I usually do
a) set the aperture to the biggest F stop. that will introduce a very shallow depth of field
b) aim for any subject in the hyperfocal distance range or roughly a third from the bottom of the frame.
c) push in the rocking lever to get to the zoom mode.
d) adjust focus accordingly
e) get out of the zoom mode and shoot accordingly.

For the 11-16mm, I would just put at F16 aim 1/3 into the frame, focus and shoot. That got most of my shots.

Just a thought for @kate_2009 :
If you are interested in an ultra wide zoom like the Tokina 11-16mm, but not sure about their fit to the Fujis with the available adapters, you might want to consider the Fujinon XF 10-24mm, though for this you'd have to wait till next year...

Sorry for my English, fit is probably not the right word. What i meant was, if one is uncertain about the various adapters, then perhaps the new 10-24mm fuji zoom might be something to be considered.

@Shangri: Hi, yes - I could wait until the 10-24mm comes out, but I'm kind of impatient to go out shooting the sceneries here as autumn approach. Furthermore, I suspect that the 10-24mm will be a little more expensive then the current Tokina 11-16mm including the adapter.

But I have to say that the size and weight of the upcoming 10-24mm is very tempting. The main reason of me wanting to go for an X-E1 or X-Pro1 is that I want the image quality of a high end consumer DSLR in a more "compact" body as I do a lot of traveling and aim to travel as light as possible.

@Wilson: Do you get any color fringing or vignetting at all for the Tokina 11-16mm when mounted on your X-Pro1? If so, at what focal length are they more problematic? Any shutter lag? Again, thanks for the much valued and appreciated post.

PS. I will be getting the Kipon EOS-XF after all as it has an aperture ring, when the Rainbowimaging and Fotodiox don't. I guess I can't do without an aperture ring on the adapter!

Hi Kate,

Shutter lag? To me was quite instantaneous. Some people might say it is slower but once the camera is in MF, then it is very fast to the point I can't distinguish between the camera and the DSLR speed.

Problematic? Usually the extreme wide end will give the most problems. Some say avoid the diffraction by not using F22.

Vignetting? not that I can see it with naked eyes.

Colour fringing? Some but not to the point it is very evident unless one pixel peeps. There is separation at the corners and so sharpness do suffer but not to the point that makes the image less usable. For the price one pays for the lens, it is pretty good actually!
