I plan on going to Sevilla (Spain) tonight where they will be holding a protest. Any one have any experiences photographing protests at all--tips....?

Yes, go for it! People at protests are there to be noticed and be seen, so if you have any inhibitions about photographing people out on the streets, this is the moment to take advantage of the opportunity. You might want to read up on some of the background, and start talking with people and perhaps follow some people so you have a focal point for your reportage. Also, if you're sympathetic to the protest's aims, get in touch with the organizers, but also with people you photograph (business card) and make your photos available.

We covered this topic, though not very thoroughly. Good luck.

I think you would have done better with the 18mm lens.

When I first started getting all my stuff together, I actually debated on just using the 50. The 18 isn't really my style, I'll try it out though next time. Honestly I don't really like the 12-24 I have. Just not my thing.

    Take a monopod.
You can get some amazing stuff with it raised high, camera pointed down about 45 degrees.

    X Pro 1 + Fujinon 35/18 ( +EF20)
    Samyang's 8mm + 85mm
    Olympus Zuiko 50mm 1.4 / 100mm 2.8
    Manfrotto 360 LED midi.

    X10.

I didn't use a monopod though. Just my good old arm! I'll remember that though. I prolly coulda got the chopped heads out of the bottome of my frame a lot better using one of those.

Next time get even closer and also change your perspective by getting more in the eye line with people. Somehow there's a sense of distance between you and the people you photograph. This is the one occasion they want tot express, and you might want to have them express to the camera. Some interesting people in your photographs that you might have wanted to get closer to. Also the red flags are very impressive. Yes to the 18mm: that would have given much more an "i'm in the midst of it" feel.
