Step-up Rings

I've noticed that those that have gone with step-up rings tend to use the 40-49mm sizing. I wanted to get one for my X10 so I could use ND & IR filters. All my current filters are 52mm or greater so I was planning on buying a couple new ones anyway to keep size down as much as possible. Having said that is there an issue with vignetting if I got a heavystar 40-46mm step-up versus the more predominantly documented 40-49mm? Any input is much appreciated!

@ci_lee: Your best solution to be able and use your 52mm filters is to attach the Fuji (or generic) lens shade/filter adapter on the lens. The adapter has 52mm threads at the end. There is no vignetting. I use one and have attached permanently a Nikon 52mm NC filter with no problems to my camera.

Problem with that solution is that the slots in the back of the factory lens hood adapter let light on to back of filter and can cause bad reflection in you pictures. You need use black tape over slots to stop light.

While in principle it could be an issue reflecting light from the back I have not experienced any reflection issues with this setup so far. However, I have seen some dust entering the back - but I always dust off the camera after any shooting. Another option I just thought, is to get a step up ring to 52mm and attached a Nikon HN1/HN2 (52mm screw mount)lens shade. These shades are all metal and well made - designed for lenses with a focal length down to 28mm. Vignetting should not be an issue.

If you go with the Fuji/Adapter/Shade you cannot use the original lens cover! I bought a generic 58mm snap-on lens cover that fits and works perfectly on the original Fuji lens shade. It has never come off!
