Square Filters - what to buy
  • Guess this must be a more general question.

I am going to purchase a filter kit based on these wonderful square kits. You know, the ones you slide in front of the lens. Karl Taylor's videos is full of them and i kind of like the easyness of such a system. I'll see if i can find a system that fits on X-pro1 lenses and Canon lenses.

Question: What can you recommend? lenks?
  • It's not that easy and you have to be pretty dedicated and persistent to learn and get good results. You could go cheap with Cokin, but they will most likely have a magneta color cast. Lee have a rangefinder holder (RF-75 Filter Holder) that would fit a camera like the x100 or x-pro1 but remember that you would depend on the EVF or the LCD to compose and figure out your composition. http://www.leefilters.com/index.php/camera-directory/camera-dir-list/category/rf-75-holder
  • Thanks @kindanatural. It will be used mostly in landscape etc.. So i guess the LCD will do for focusing etc. I believe that I will not buy too cheap. Experience tells me that you always end up spending more money, when u find out that the cheap stuf sucks;-)

I bought Cokin filters donkey's years ago - their P series - and I've had no problems at all, all through my OM fully manual years, my EOS autofocus film years, with my Leica Digilux 2, and now with my X-Pro1.

Over the years I've dropped most of the stuff, the only two I now carry are an ND grad and a polariser. Everything else can be done in software.

I believe that if you put tobacco grads in front of your lens to enhance a sunset then you'll persuade the WB sensor that it needs to correct a colour cast and you'll end up back where you were apart from a loss of light, so I think stuff like that should be done in software.

I'm thinking of adding two or three more ND filters so that I can get longer exposure times for water scenes. Other than that I think my filter collection is complete.

    To sum up:
    1. Cokin, though cheap, aren't that bad.
    2. A filter kit needs only:
      • Circular polarizer.
      • ND grad(s)
      • Grad(s)

    Let the flaming commence! ;-)

(I have to admit, I cannot deny the quality of the Lee filters, and maybe, if you're going to print at, say, > 10 x 8, then perhaps the better quality filters will do less harm to the final image - I just can't afford a whole new filter set up at this time.)

  • Thanx for the freat reply @PurestBlue. Appreciate it. I'll have a look at the Cokin P. Problem with living in the western part of Denmark is that there are no photo-stores for miles, so i kind of have to rely on whatever info i can get on the allmighty internet. Basicall i shoot with X-pro1, X100 and Canon L series glass. So if there is a system outthere that fit's 'em all, that'l be the choice for me...

Well it was a long time since I used Cokin P, but I think the beauty with the system is that you buy a set of filters and a thing with slots to put them in ("hållare" på svenska ;) ) and then you use different not so expensive rings to match the different lenses you have.
Please correct me someone if I'm wrong, but that is what I remember.

That's exactly right, and I think Lee filters are the same, only more expensive.
