Lens and OVF Dust - QC Issues?
  • Hi,

I Recently bought an X10 (serial number 22N0xxxx), but have been reading all kinds of horror stories about "White Disc Orbs", which have seemingly been fixed with a sensor update (though Fuji UK said they couldn't tell me from serial number if mine has the new sensor or not), and now I'm hearing about quality control issues that have allowed dust to become trapped in the lens during manufacturing which works itself loose after a few days of use. This can be either in the lens, the OVF or both. Some people believe it becomes sucked into the lens by zooming in or out too quickly, but some evidence I have seen shows the dust to be far too large, so I would personally say its there from the factory.

My question is, after reading 97 reviews on Amazon US and another 51 on Amazon UK, only 1 person mentioned it, though it seems to be all over sites like DPReview and so on. Is this a big problem that most X10 users have experienced or is it just a few X10's that have slipped past Quality Control and made into stores when they should have been rejected?

    Many thanks!

While it has happened, I don't think it's a big issue. You should also take comfort in the fact that Fujifilm UK seems to have a stellar warranty service department, should anything ever arise.

  • Hi Christopher and thanks for the reply.

I contacted Fuji UK after posting on here yesterday and they said more or less the same thing, so that's a weight off my mind. I do see however that there is now talk of a replacement for the X10 (and X100), so all I have to decide now is go with the X10 or (as I haven't opened it yet), return it and hold on to the cash for a month or so until the newer models emerge.

Talking of emailing Fuji UK, I have just recontacted them to ask when the X10 Ergonomic Extension Kit will be going on sale in the UK, as I've seen it on Amazon in the US for $129.99 (about £85 UK pounds), but there's no word of it on Amazon UK yet, or anywhere else for that matter!

while Fuji may announce new cameras at Photokina, it'll probably be another several months before they actually hit the streets.
  • Thanks Biscuit,

I agree, I can't imagine seeing them until Nov/Dec time.

I have just had a reply from Fuji UK and the X10 Ergonomic Extension Kit is going to sell for £140.00 from Robert White Photography. That's a lot more than I expected going by the US price (which I'm sure would be minus VAT), but even so, it's a bit high!

I sent mine in last April. Now for the "Orb" fix.
