Help in improving the usability of X-Pro1 Pls
  • 1st off I'll admit I've still not used my X-Pro as much as I would have liked and really gotten to know it - in relationship terms I think we're at an awkward 2nd date stage... ;-)

One thing that I really find a pain is that while the camera has a nice viewfinder/s I'm struggling to get to grips with using it and auto-focusing effectively. I have the camera set to the small focus area setting(sorry no manual to hand for official name) and would like to quickly set my AF point.

When I have the X-Pro to my eye I hold the right-side of the camera with my right-hand and gently hold the lens by its aperture ring with my left-hand while the corner of the body rests on the "pad" of my thumb. I find this a very stable position while allowing my to quickly change the aperture or focus with my left hand and "tweak" settings with my right.

This means I have to completely change my grip, or stick my thumb up my nose, to hit the AF button on the left of the camera so that I can then position the AF point with my right-hand. I was disappointed that I couldn't assign the Fn button to do this.

Any suggestions on how to improve this situation as it would really help when trying to use this camera to take images in a portrait or wedding setting without "leaving the frame" as you try different compositions? I'm open to suggestions about both camera settings and physical techniques.

BTW I'm in no way comparing the X-Pro to my DSLR as I like them both for different reasons and one's not prettier I mean better than the other ;-)

On the x100 I just use the center AF-frame and recompose, like in the good ol' days. (But on that camera you have to hold the AF-button to move the AF point, so that's practically useless.)
  • Thanks for the input guys. I've read that article and am pretty much doing the same thing, maybe I just need to keep at it... :-(

"You should also get very comfortable to use focus point selection. I get far better results when I select the focus point to be on the correct spot in the frame compared to focus and recompose - especially with the XF 18mm lens. I tend to get really close to my subject with the 18mm lens to get a shallow depth of field. And during the focus and recompose process a few centimeters movement can ruin the focus. So get that muscle memory in your fingers trained to press the AF button once and then select the focus area on the arrow buttons."
