How To Post Your Photos On The Forum

    This is a how-to guide for posting your photos on the forum to share with others. Many photo hosting services like Flickr and SmugMug provide simple tools to generate the appropriate HTML code needed to post a smaller thumbnail that links directly the the photo's own page. All you have to do is copy this HTML code and paste it into your new post here on the forum.

    HTML

    If you host your own images on your website or elsewhere, here's a simple example of the HTML code needed to post an image here on the forum:

    <img src="http://www.yourwebsite.com/path/to/your/image.jpg " />

    You can alternatively link the image back to a page on your website:

    <a href="http://www.example.com "><img src="http://www.example.com/your/image.jpg " /></a>

    If you click the photo icon photo icon in the editor menu above the text area, a dialog will pop up asking for the URL to your image. Simply paste it into the dialog box, click ok, optionally enter some descriptive text in the next dialog, click ok again, and the properly formatted HTML will be automatically generated for you.

    Flickr

    When viewing the appropriate photo on Flickr, click the second button to the upper left of the photo, select "Grab the HTML/BBCode", and copy the code it generates.

    Flickr sharing guide

    The best size to use for our forum is the 'Medium 640', but you can use 'Small' or 'Thumbnail' sizes as well. Be sure you're using HTML rather than BBCode, as BBCode is not compatible with our forum.

    SmugMug

    When viewing the appropriate photo on SmugMug, click the "Share" button to the upper right of the photo, and select "Get a Link".

    SmugMug sharing guide step 1

    Once you're taken to the links page, select the "Embeddable Links" tab and click the "Copy" button for the appropriate image size under the 'Blogs' section. The "Blog-Medium" size is the best for our forum, but you can use the smaller size as well.

    SmugMug sharing guide step 2

    Then simply paste the HTML code here into the text area when making a new post on the forum. The image here will link back to the photo's own page on SmugMug.

    Photobucket

    When viewing an image on Photobucket, simply copy the HTML code provided in the "Share" box and paste it here into your forum post.

  • I use iphoto on my Mac - can you paste in the URL address into the 'export' function?

    @daveywavey10, I don't believe so, you'll need to upload them to an image hosting service like Flickr. There's a plugin for iPhoto available that can help automate the process: http://connectedflow.com/flickrexport/ or Flickr has a simple free drag and drop tool: http://www.flickr.com/tools/

    Your photos will need to be hosted somewhere, like Flickr, PhotoBucket, SmugMug, etc. Then you can place them in a post with the instructions above.

    Alternatively, you can go to http://www.tinypic.com to upload an individual photo, and then you can post it here using simple HTML

    <img src="http://123.tinypic.com/yourimage.jpg&quot; />

    Apologies Christopher - I am having problems posting X100 images from my blog - I will try again later Thanks

    @X100_User You'll have to use the full URL to the image (one ending in jpg), it appears you were only using the URL to your blog post. You can get an image's URL by right clicking on the photo and selecting "Copy Image Address" or "Copy Image Location" or some similar wording, depending on the web browser you're using.

    Hope this helps! Let me know if you still have any trouble.

    Hey @Mule! You're nearly there, I fixed your posts for you to display your images.

    The code you need looks like this:
    <img src="http://tinpic.com/image.jpg&quot; />

    The one you had been trying to use with the [IMG] tags only works with different forum software.

    @FujiX100World, You can simply paste the URL into your post like you did up above, it will be automatically turned into a link. If you want to post photos from your blog, you will need to use the full URL to the image (one ending in jpg). You can get an image's URL by clicking on the photo (when viewing it on your blog post) and simply copying the photo's URL address from your web browser.

    An example of the code you need looks like this:
    <img src="http://www.strutt.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSCF4452.jpg&quot; />

    Which would display your photo like so:

    @cosinaphile, you almost had it in the second post, but you don't want to use the [img] tags, just the direct URL to the jpg. Your code will look like this:

    <img src="http://i54.tinypic.com/2hxa9f6.jpg&quot; alt="" />

    If you click the 'photo' icon at the top of our editor, you can simply paste the image URL into the dialog that pops up, and it will place it inside the appropriate HTML img tag for you.

    @Christopher Hi. I'm having trouble posting photos from flickr. I grab the HTML code but when I post the photo it posts a bit of the code I pasted. Help?

    Thanks.

    Hi @PaulV! If I understand correctly, you should just paste the code from Flickr directly into the comment box, no need to use picture button above.

    rain lily

    I took this photo right after a morning shower because that's when rain lilies look best. As the wind was pretty strong, I waited for 15 minutes to get a good, steady shot. It was taken at ISO 400, f=5.6 and speed 1/120.

    Remember to remove the height and width attributes from the HTML

    You just need the image URL to post any photo.

  • This is really useful info from the OP, as are a few other threads that disappear eventually. Maybe a few more threads need to be added to articles and user guides category? Or some other section dedicated to key threads which would make them easier to find for new users, and prevent some of the same questions coming up every few days. It's not a prob to answer them as people are dead keen and friendly here, but ...
    Any thoughts?

    I can certainly agree @MikeJMcFarlane, I'm open to suggestions on which discussions should be added to the articles and guides section.

  • Hi.

    What's the correct way of embedding videos on this forum?

    I do some HTML, but i am sure there is an easier way?

  • For Youtube and Vimeo, the video URL can simply be pasted into your text, and it will automatically be embedded. Unfortunately this system is not perfect, if the string '?feature=player_embedded' is included in a Youtube URL, it may not be recognized.

    Nice pics, I like the low viewpoints.
    As cold as it looks, there's no place I'd rather be than Cumbria or Snowdonia.
