poor AWB at the park?

Hi all, I'm new to the camera, new to more serious/manual photography (e.g. I just finished Peterson's Understanding Exposure), new to the site. I've read that the x100's auto white balance is great, so I was surprised when I got home from the park yesterday and found all my photos to have (what seems to me) the same poor balance as these attached images. The skin tone in particular seems off. Obviously, my default assumption is that it's something I did wrong, I'm just not sure what it might be. I shot these JPG, with film simulation, color, etc. all still at the mid/std settings. I wish I'd shot RAW so I could fiddle with the in-camera processing to find the culprit ...

Maybe it's the case that this white balance actually looks right to you, and it's just my preference that it be warmer? Maybe it's the mix of shade and sun that threw off the AWB? Any suggestions are of course appreciated. Thanks!

PS. I realize I also underexposed the second photo. Still learning!

  • AWB is not a wizzard. It tries to balance the overall picture. It can't guess that a particullar shape in a frame is skin, and do the best for that area. In your case it's too much green around, even in the clothes, not only landscape, to not fool WB.
Next time try using clouds preset, it gives you the warmest WB for the daylight.
And JPEGs can be fixed in your case as well, don't trust so much the RAW myths ;)

May i suggest I look through the images using 2 monitors. One is calibrated, the other isn't and the one that is calibrated is ok as the provia and skin tones makes it less contrasty.

Perhaps get another calibrated screen to check it out. It turns out ok for me, a tad blue but is ok. Maybe because it is taken in the shade as well.
