September 2011 Photo Challenge
  • September's X100 Photo Challenge is: "Street B&W"

The Fujifilm FinePix X100 is naturally inclined to shoot street photography, the compact size, fast lens, and nearly silent shutter provide many unique opportunities . For our second X100 Enthusiasts Photo Challenge we're going to capture a black and white street photograph, something featuring a unique every day moment within our local world. Carefully capture a street scene in the timeliness of black and white, and explore the capabilities of your camera in photographing life around you. Explore the built in B&W filters of the X100, or push it further with black and white post processing.

    The Rules

    1. Your photo submission needs to be your own work, taken with a Fujifilm FinePix X100.
    2. You may only submit one photo per challenge.
    3. Your photo must not have been taken before September 1st, 2011.
    4. Briefly explain the settings and technique you used to capture the image.
    5. Post your photo here in this discussion, no larger than 1280 pixels wide (640 pixels wide is ideal). You may link your submission to a larger version on your website, Flickr, Photobucket, etc. if you want.

Try to have your submission posted before the end of the month! There is no exact end date, but we'll be moving on to a new photo challenge in October, so don't wait too long! If you need help posting your photograph to the discussion, read this handy guide.

Enjoy these challenges? Share your comments and ideas for future assignments in our Photo Challenge discussion.

f/3.2, 1/200sec., iso-800, spot metering. Taken originally in provia, processed in photoshop for b/w and some cropping. The dog was very intent in what he/she was doing that he/she only looked at me once then returned his/her gaze to the shop's doorway. ッ

Took this picture while visiting Monterey, CA this weekend. I was inside the Ghirardelli store and I saw this guy in his ice-cream suit working outside of the store. I loved the moment. This was shot in B&W and I adjusted the contrast in Lightroom.

Processed in lightroom play a little on a curve tone and add some grain to achieve a film look. I really like their expression and the hand that sticking out touching the girls hip. Took this picture in San Francisco.

I had a couple of hours to kill making a connection in Rome when I spotted this scene just as my flight was called. I placed my hand luggage down in front of my subject, unzipped my X100, took it out of macro, and carefully made adjustments... actually never really looked through the viewfinder. It is a striking scene, and I like the way the laptop is plugged into the wall socket (which I only noticed when I got home, downloaded it and really observed the scene!) This shot works well in colour too... which you can also view in my "street photography" flickr set. Some distortion editing in LR3.
  • I havent really done much street shooting with the X100 yet, this one was one handed as i walked by and had to be rotated and cropped a little.

Had to fire the flash on this one, but it was just too strange not to take a picture. This was taken at a Decentralized Dance Party. The theme was strictly business. Yep, these are business ghosts.

Set to Shutter Priority: 1/500s and ExpComp -1/3 (do the -EC also with my D90 to try and gain some shutter speed, you can save shadows in pp but not highlights) the x100 decided A would be 2 and ISO 640.
I USUALLY go with Aperture priority, but Im trying Shutter priority ATM to try and avoid blurry subjects.
Also set to the fastest burst which is what I'm trying atm to get a series of shots as I walk by someone.
Southsea had their Albert Road - Southsea Fest that day and I spotted him whist on a wander, he looked interesting standing outside the fruit machine shop so I got a few shots as I walked past, I didn't notice the graphic of the girl in the window till I got it in Aperture. But then these are some of the nice unexpected surprises in street photography which counter the probably more frequent missed moment as the elements you spot diverge as you approach them or a just fading as you spot them - I had a few of those today.

  • Say hello to Louis Mendes.
Famous NYC street photographer who just hangs around street corners with his old Polaroid.

I was in New York for a very short 48 hours and was lucky enough to bump into him so I stopped, pointed at him then pointed at my camera, he nodded with a slight grin and then simply looked straight in the middle ok the lens, I pressed the shutter and that was it.
Was over in 4 seconds and is one of my favorite shots from that short trip.

Next time I go to NYC, if I see him again, I'll take another shot but I'll also ask him to shoot me.

    Taken in London's Chinatown.
    ISO 800, 1/150, F2.8

  • I really liked this couple of women (mother/daughter, I believe). I was showing a friend around Brussel and hitting up the touristy places. There are no shortages of Asian tourists in all of europe, and I think it's GREAT that their culture is very interested in traveling the world so extensively...and so interested in documenting it very well. They are so often (constantly) camera-in-hand....so we have this in common, too! :)

This mother/daughter pair was taking pictures near the Grand Place, taking turns taking pictures of each other and then retreated to this corner to review them. That's when I got my friend to stand in front of me (facing me) and I snapped this picture over her shoulder. haha Keep it stealthy ;)

It's my favorite picture from today...mainly because of the way it reminds me of the two people in it and their dynamic.

  • Two friends share a tender moment on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
This is a great example of how the camera is so discrete. I was maybe 8 feet away from them when I took this picture. I don't think i could have pulled that off with a DSLR.
Settings: f/9, 1/250, ISO 200. Shutter speed priority. 0 exposure comp. Multi-segment metering.
