The X100 as an indoor event camera
  • My friend asked me to take photographs of their daughter's baptism in a church, casual event and not a whole lot of people. I decided to bring my X100 plus a spare battery along to see how it performs in indoor and low light conditions. How would the X100 perform, taking every aspect of its performance into consideration? I'm also bringing my D40 with 35mm f/1.8 if in case Murphy's law dictates the situation.
  • Infant, shot indoors - high ISO, 1/60th second
ISO 2500 f/2.0 1/60th - despite the somewhat high key look, lighting here was very dim, parent holding child on a chair was in a dark corner of basement suite with a single incandescent lamp running and of course a window behind the child. Brightened a little in post processing.

    Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal
ISO 3200 f/4.0 1/45th - typical dark older church, little post processing revision.

So yes, I do believe your X100 is up to the task. You'll want to be very comfortable with your camera before the event. Auto ISO will probably be your friend, and more than likely you'll want to enable silent mode too.
  • Very nice shots. I have just one question. When shooting indoor (at birthday parties for examplel) would you exclusively use higher ISO and no flash or ISO 200 + flash and Auto settings ? As for me I like to compose and I rather enjoy using higher ISO but still I am wondering if it is necessary or worth it in this type of situation.

hmm, i haven't tried covering an indoor event with the x100 yet, but if ever i will be, then i intend to use higher ISO and no flash. but if necessary x100 can be used with its ef-20 flash, it's got wide diffuser for a more natural indoor look. :)

I have had really good results with my x100 with high ISO (1600) without using flash. The noise s contained and can easily be removed with LR or the like. I do not believe the flash is powerful enough and is simply too distracting to be used indoors during certain events. Those images look really good - nice work.

If your indoors subject is moving (e.g. people), the X100 is not the best choice IMHO, I have recently tried to capture some scenes from a stage performance in a decently lit theater, it was hit and miss. A quiet DSLR with a fast lens would definitely result in more usable shots and less frustration. Of course, I would bring both :)
