Shoot first, focus later camera!?
  • Interesting concept, to say the least:

  • It would be nice, but I feel like they missed the mark. Such a feature is more important to the slightly more pro public and the camera they released is everything but. It's interesting but is the average P&S customer going to spend a premium($400) to buy a camera for a feature that they probably don't care about to begin with and will rarely use. As it stands right now I only see a richer niche oh-I-just-wanna-have-it market going after it.
  • Yes, I agree. It looks like a toy for the Facebook market. Well, maybe the technology will be developed further, who knows.

    Ive been ranting on G+ about this lol.
    Its an interesting concept but in its current incarnation I don't see the point. Its tiny res Flash based click to focus toy images for Facebook.
    Even the examples on the their website seem fairly pointless: 2 flowers to focus on; man or surf - really, whats the point?
    I can see putting party images on Facebook where you can focus on bob puking in the background but for $400! really?!
    Im really not keen on the design either, it looks cheap and is just squared off torch with the shutter button in an awkward position and judging by the video the zoom is not the easiest things to use. Having the display on the rear seems odd too.
    I guess its design by necessity.
    Plus, what the hell is a "light field camera" anyway, the 'science' behind it on the site is vague enough to mean little.
    I can see some hipsters getting in quick enough before its popular to strap 2 to their faces as digital binoculars but tbh that ships probably left already anyway as I'm sure its too popular for hipsters by now - and too cheap :\

    @ mattmaber. Not sure if you had read the CEO's dissertation posted on their site, contains some very interesting information. My head started to hurt when I saw all those equations... Here is the link: https://www.lytro.com/renng-thesis.pdf

    enjoy :)

    @WilzWorkz7 lol

    @jackk just had a ganders, yeah maybe TOO technical LOL. Im sure theres a happy medium. I think it looks like it has a set of lenses which mean it effectivly takes a photo with a few focal lengths and then the software calculates any missing bits.

    Im not really down on this on principle, I just think it looks ugly and at that cheap considering the high price tag.

    And Im just not sure in its current low res configuration (I heard the 12mp sensor results in 2mp final image, or there abouts) theres a real decent use for it. I dont see the purpose of it in sharing images on facebook over current P&Ss which have pretty much everything in focus. Especially, again, for the price. Its just a gimmick.

    In short, it seems to be solving a problem that no one has.

    I am of course still happy to be proven wrong.
