Fujifilm X-Pro1 Mirror-less Camera Details Leak

Wells Fargo Advisors investment news website has inadvertently leaked details of Fujifilm's soon to be announced mirror-less interchangeable lens camera system through a press release scheduled for January 10th. The new camera will be called the Fujifilm X-Pro1, featuring a 16 megapixel APS-CMOS sensor, second generation hybrid optical viewfinder, and 3 prime lenses.

The press release is as follows:

    Released : Tuesday, January 10, 2012 12:01 AM

The new models include the X-Pro1, X-S1 (shipping this month at an expected $800 suggested retail) and a new F series model in the F750EXR (shipping in March at an expected $350).

The highlight of the offerings is the Fujifilm X-Pro1, which is a highly featured compact system camera. Fuji-filim said it will build on the success of the X100 model, by adding a camera that features a custom-developed 16-megapixel APS-CMOS sensor incorporating a new filter array and the company's proprietary EXR processor technology.

The camera also includes a second-generation hybrid view-finder and takes three prime interchangeable Fuji-non lenses, all with fast apertures.

    The lenses include: the 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0, 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 and 60mm (90mm equivalent) f/2.4.

No word yet on the pricing of the X-Pro1, or the expected ship date. Fujfilm has previously stated they their mirror-less camera will ship in the spring of 2012. I'll be on the lookout for any product photo leaks leading up to Fujifilm's official announcement on the 10th. As Further proof of the X-Pro1 name, Fujifilm is listed as the owner of xpro1.com and fujifilmxpro1.com.

Based upon the leaked prototype photographs, the X-Pro1 is expected to look similar to this rendering:

    Fuji LX10 mockup

Yesterday this photograph was leaked showing the lens mount on what looks to be a finished X-Pro1 body, note the similarities to the rendering above:

    Fuji X-Pro1 body lens mount

The next generation APS-C sensor and hybrid viewfinder should bring along great improvements to the X100's initial design. Their 3 prime lens approach should cover the needs of many photographers, and allow the optical viewfinder to remain a versatile tool.

Update: MirrorlessRumors has posted an article from French magazine Réponses Photo that has spilled all the details, including the price, 1300€ with 35mm lens, with the other lenses selling for 600€ each.

If you look at the two pictures above carefully there are several really distinct differences.
The top photo has an LED under the viewfinder the bottom does not.
The ridge that runs across the front of the camera under the viewfinder is a different shape and follows a different path in each photo.
The eylet for the strap on the top photo is centered almost at the bottom edge of the viewfinder square in the top photo. In the bottom photo the bottom of the eylet is at the bottom of the viewfinder (it's quite a bit higher).
The MCS switch on the bottom photo appears to be more like the X10 switch than the top photo but it's hard to tell from the angles.
One of those photos is not correct.

Not to sure about the design. Looks a bit bulky, and not as smooth as i was hoping for. Looks like someone is trying to fit a group of ten people into a car that only has five seats.

I will wait until i see some official photos, and the fujiguys having their hands on it for the first time. The specs looks all right, but i kind a hoped for a fullframe. The price of the camera body and the lenses will be the critical point which will determinate if it is a success or a failure. The lenses aviable at launch looks right for me. They have covered the most used focal lenghts, but i would like to see something in the longer length

Well heck! I certainly don't need it......but I want it! I absolutely love the design! I understand there will be some environmental sealing as well!

If they have a lens with manual zoom and a great Macro I'll probably take the plunge!

I hate it when this happens..... :-)

I wonder if the special edition is an unofficial one like the "Leica-alike" a month or so ago.

I'm assuming it's official. Seen an official Fuji X100 black leather case LC-X100 listed on eBay a few times. Would be a perfect match to a new black X100.

@chrispy afaik theres been an official X100 black case since they made them. Not sure how that is relevant to this black X100 being official or not.

Looks like I'll be more in the market for an XPRO2. This is a bit too bulky and I don't like it in black. The lenses also don't really suite me. The wide's too wide and the telephoto is not tele enough. Hopefully there will be more by the next version.

From reading the article above, the camera body with 35mm lens will cost 1300€, with other lenses costing up to 600€. The lens mount standard will be called X-Mount, and the lenses from Fujifilm are 'Fujinon XF' lenses featuring an all metal construction with aperture rings at the base, and focus rings at the front.

Fujifilm will also be releasing a limited edition all black X100 with black leather case, special shoulder strap, and black lens hood in March. Only 10,000 units will be made. No price has been set, but it's expected to be expensive.

It comes in the 60mm or 90mm/35 as it will have macro capabilities. 90mm is a good focal length for macro too apart from being a good portrait lens.

+1. Am not biting too..the lens offering is not helping in sealing the deal. And also the flash systems? And the fact that the 35mm equivalent is missing. That means they still have a heart for the x100 (then we should really ask for the new firmware update since they are keeping it!)

Translation of the French article's main points (from x100forum.com):

    1.Deliveries will start in March

2.Camera kit includes 35mm lens and will be priced around € 1,300

3.Other lenses will be priced around € 600

4.Camera features APS-C sized sensor (crop factor 1.5)

5.Sensor will feature a color filter pattern w/ 6 filter sites per pixel instead of the usual 4 of a normal Bayer pattern; no AA filter required -> higher native sensor resolution

    6.60mm lens has macro capabilities

7."X-Mount" bayonet system features 17.7mm flange-to-sensor distance, and features a minimum distance from back lens to sensor of 7.5mm

    8.Hybrid VF w/ zoom function

    9.VF features parallax compensation

It should be quite easy to adapt a wide array of manual lenses like Leica M mount and old SLR lenses to the X-Pro 1, and use the EVF with them. I'm sure some suitable adaptor rings will be produced shortly after the X-Pro's release. This has been a common practice with the Sony NEX system, and it works quite well.

Someone comment on TheVerge mentioning Sony NEXs edge fringe thing to help manual focus. DO you think Fuji may have something to aid MF besides the zoom thing

  • wow! if it is fast and works properly, this is going to be a fantastic camera. the lens selection is close to perfect, and the form fantastic... cross your fingers on the function... if it lives up to (or surpasses) its' potential, this is going to be my new documentary workhorse.

pissing on the angle of the slope? ugly? bulky? don't like black? are you kidding me?

when i got my ep1 back in 2009 i used a lens cap, a epoxy paste, and giant washers and components from disassembled "junk"lenses to permanently fix a nikkor h 50mm f2 f mount lens as a m43lens [ cost then 20 bucks], it worked beautifully, and gave me a 100mm fov f2 portrait prime that gives lovely bokeh and great color and contrast that 3 years later oly
duplicated in the very nice 45mm f1.8 m.zukio that is considered reasonable at 400 dollars

i then did the same thing with 4 dollar lens caps for the pentax 110 18mm 2.8 the 24mm 2.8
the 50 2.8 and a 70mm 2.8 and a 20-40 2.8 zoom all with using bonded 110 lens caps and micro 4\3 bodycaps with careful didtance registration

now of course i use many commercial adapters the most successful imho being
a canon fd 200 2.8 with a fov of 400 f2.8[wow pin sharp] a konica 58mm 1.2 with a fov 116mm f 1.2[a blast to shoot with at night] and for sheer lens goodness and color and contrast and lens "painting" the contax g 45 f2 and 90 2.8 which render 90mm and 180mm fovs on micro 4\3

.....i going to buy all three native lenses and enjoy using them as intended with goood af perf i hope , but you can bet i will tinker with adapted glass, drilling the body cap the night i buy it :)

That will be a 2500€ combo. An amount of money I don't have currently. So I prefer to find arguments against it, just not to suffer too badly. Anyway, the SAP problem of the X100 does call for a little bit of restrain, just the time to see if the real stuff is up to the promise.

@shadowdetails, everyone his opinion. You can like the body design or don't care, I can not or attach more importance to the design of my cameras than you do, and we are both entitled as silly forum members (I don't recall having maintain any blog so far) free to express whatever we want in the limits of reason, decency and respect. I hope you do agree on that important point participating to the forum.

I bought my X10 for it's compact size and not having to change out the lens (zoom). This new camera is like the X100 w/changeable lenses. For the money I would prefer to purchase a more system complete camera... the Sony A77.
  • @gregvds of course you can say whatever you want! that is the fun of this thing. so can i. :) i like a cool looking camera just like the next guy... and cool sounding ones too: nothing better than the thunderous clank of a big bodied medium format!!! but to not buy a camera because of it's bulky looks and evil slank? especially one that could be as revolutionary as the x-pro 1? that is where the silly comes in. silly silly silly. it's not like it is painted pink. save pretty for flower gardens, give me a work horse!

Sweet, maybe, depending on application. For my D300, 1.8 sure beats 2.8 and 4.0, but on what: 50mm versus 70-200mm versus 200-400mm? I can't live without my zooms!

If Fuji adds a zoom I'm still good - I need the X10's P&S size, can't beat that with the new ones - thankfully!

ill be using a 200 mm 2.8fd on the new fuji[300mm fov 2.8] and ill use a homemade adapter until a canon one is available ,also a ep1 body cost 200 us dollars new right now and works exceptionally well with adapted glass with inexpensive and readily available adapters for virtually any camera mount , a good cheap interim solution until the fuji is released

That is a good plan! By the time you are in Hawaii the x100s price would be expected to drop quite a bit with the realase of the X-pro1 on the steps :)

I would love for the price of the x100 to drop, I don't mind spending the money for it now though. I just want a camera lol, currently shooting with my canon s95. Gave up all my dslr's and wanted to try my hands on the fuji.
