Firmware 1.2 wishlist

    Here's my 2p...

    1. When Fn=ND, single press to switch it on/off. Now need to go through a dialog box.

    2. Manual focus distance scale should be in grey colour, not some fluorescent distraction. Better still, offer users a choice of colour.

    3. Manual focus distance scale depth of field - offer users a choice of circle of confusion. Now way too conservative (or plain wrong) & useless

    4. Second-level Auto ISO. I'd like to set TWO max ISO and TWO min shutter speeds. So when the camera hits max ISO 1, it begins to lower shutter speed below setting 1, until it hits shutter speed 2, after which it begins to increase ISO until it hits max ISO 2. Then it begins to lower shutter speed again.

    Example: max ISO 1 = 800; min shutter speed 1 = 1/125th; max ISO 2 = 3200; min shutter speed 2 = 1/45th
The camera would behave like this (starting with bright conditions):
    ISO 800, 1/125
    ISO 800, 1/60
    ISO 800, 1/45
    ISO 1600, 1/45
    ISO 3200, 1/45
    ISO 3200, 1/30 etc.

    5. When silent mode is on, I don't want to see a sign of crossed flash in EVF - it's distractive.

    6. RAW button = second Fn

    BTW - it's a great camera :) Cheers!

    7. Either change, or allow users to change the sensitivity of the manual focus ring. It's way too sensitive in its current configuration to be of any use.

8 - Same size focus box on manual focus mode as auto focus and parallax compensated second box on manual focus mode for focusing with the AFL button.
    9 - Faster autofocus :)
10 - Snap-focus feature like Ricoh GR Digital line (not really holding my breath for this one)

I wouldn't disagree with any of these, I think we'd have to consider ourselves fortunate if more than two of these are addressed on the next Firmware update.......I would be amazed though if they do not address the manual focus issues, at present its all but useless. As we all know there is no such thing as a perfect camera, the X100 is still awesome!

2 things i would like is faster wake up and snappier movement thru the menu

but most importantly i fould like a firmware update to allow the exposure comp dial to permit 1\3 stop adjustments while in manual mode.......... its easy to spin the dial but id like to have the clariity a a clearly marked dial to exposure comp than a plastic wheel

i shoot with the ricoh gxr and m mount module with adapted glass
i shoot with the samsung ex1 and the ricoh gx 200
i shoot with the ep1 and gf1 with adapted slr and rf glass
i shoot with the x100 and the x10

ken rockwell clued me into this and now i shoot manual focus all the time and love it and dont find the manual focus wheel a PITA anymore

HERES HOW ....1] set switch to left of lens to MF
2] USING the ael\afl lock button bring your subject into focus using the cameras focus computer
3] hit the lever near the top right to enlarge the center
4] now using the mf ring fine tune your focus , it is now that you will appreciate the fine degree of change in the mf mechanism , now it makes sense to me
a coarser quicker changing mf ring would not allow the degree of fineness nexessary to tweak very tiny amounts , and having 2 speeds would be an inelegant fiddely soluttion

focus by wire isnt perfect in any camera , but using this method i find the x100s response and finetuneability to be among the best , i i tried to mf from a standstill
without this method , id be tearing my hair out.

Woah woah woah, what's this about hitting the lever near the top right? I've only been using the MF - AEL/AFL focusing method and haven't touched that lever during focus. Does enlarging the center give the focus lock a larger sample to focus on? I'm not sure I understand how this benefits MF, but you can bet your ass I'm interested!

Sigh, it looks like we are going to get some rain today so I left the camera at home (motorcycle to work) or else I'd be playing with this right now!

Ugh, nevermind. The "lever" they were referring to was the OVF/EVF toggle lever. I was assuming they meant the toggle wheel (control wheel?) on the back of the camera, just above the AEL/AFL button. That's why I was so shocked when I first read this, I thought toggling the control wheel did something I wasn't aware of.

If anyone needs me, I'll be in the corner looking embarrassed...

pressing in the toggle above the AEL button zooms in the screen (in MF mode). it does also appear to make the AEL button more reliable - imho

Sorry I've just realised this topic has already got a thread open (http://www.x100enthusiasts.com/discussion/177/now-that-1.10-is-out-what-do-you-want-to-see-in-the-next-updates)

Anyway, I've got one more wish:

    12. AE Bracketing - please give me ±2EV! ±1EV is just not good enough for HDR

disable bracketing by default to prevent HDR :p ;)

    Usable manual focus.
  • Allow higher ISO setting when auto ISO is enabled.
I really like the auto ISO feature on this camera. It's a nice safety net in that if you've set the ISO to be a low value such as 400 it will automatically bump the ISO up if there is not enough light for a reasonably fast shutter speed (you determine the threshold for the shutter speed). Unfortunately, if you set ISO to be 6400 it will move the ISO down to 3200 (or whatever you've set the maximum allowed ISO to be) as you press the shutter button. Why in the world would they reduce the ISO from what I've set it to?

ok so if you mf using the afl ael lock your halfway there....i simply point out that enlarging your view with a push of the back toggle will allow for much greater precision
when mf ing cause you can see what your doing

its the same press that you do in review to see a close up of a shot image when in review mode except you use it to see the effect of the mf ring after bringing the focus point up
so you can see the effect of turning the mf dial in real time

  • AE Bracket should allow 2+- stops as 1 stop +- isn't right for HDR.
  • Fn should be on off for ND as suselko has noted.
  • Raw button is useless and should be second function as suselko has noted.
  • There should be an auto aperature bump up that overrides manual, or an auto ND (your choice) for impossible exposures i.e. F2 at 4000.
  • Fuji needs to fix the in-camera Adobe RGB color space for jpegs. When Adobe RGB is chosen, greens and blues particularly take on an almost neon appearance. The lower gamut SRGB default space does not show this issue but it would certainly be preferable to have the wider gamut available for use with the fim simulation modes.
  • manual focus will be more "responsive"

no need to turn the dial like forever
  • I want to see, the video side of things updated, focussing while recording and fixed exposure.
  • Auto iso option in the iso menu
Ability to switch between auto and specific ISO value if you have ISO assigned to FN
Manual focus ring that works, i.e less than a million turns between near and infinity.
    Better low light focusing
Cross hair or smaller focus box when in manual focus mode
The ability to use flash in silent mode

This is more a flight of fancy but it'd be cool to see some more use of the hybrid viewfinder, perhaps a split prism focus screen effect.

is there any rumor about new firmware release date?
  • Not that I'm aware of. I'm just a bit sad and have too much time on my hands.
  • Manual focus ring is a fine tune option - use AEL/AFL button to get close.

I'm sure that Fuji have enough suggestions / fault reports by now to make a significant update to the firmware - all I really want to know, is how much longer must we wait to see the next release?

    Cheers

  • Only really two for me:

Auto ISO on the Fn button ISO menu
Fix for the slow start up when using a card with a large number of images on it.

  • Being able to set and configure my own setting for the B&W style, adding precentages of sepia or any color and so, just like in my Nikon D700.
  • Perhaps the manual focus ring could operate in two modes, a fast one (default option, allowing for quick zone focusing) and a slow one (allowing for precise focus, when the lever near the top right is hit)? If the focusing mechanism is electronic (fly-by-wire - whatever this means) rather than mechanical, perhaps in principle there is no objection to this solution?

The new Fuji X10 has added auto ISO settings to the main ISO menu, hopefully Fujifilm can give us the same functionality for the X100, it's been really nice to have on the new camera.

And the option to have ONE and only ISO setting, and not one by mode (APSM)?
  • Scroll between images in playback while zoomed in.

Same size magnification on zoomed in playback for RAW only shooting as it is for RAW and jpeg shooting.

ND toggle with the Fn button

Hot shoe not disabled when in silent mode.

    Those will do me.

  • Just the things recently annoying me most:

    • When setting aperture and shutter speed manually, and auto ISO is enabled, the exposure comp dial should work.

    • When setting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO manually, the live histogram should display the actual dialed-in exposure!

So I just tried the trick with the manual focus and the AEL/AFL and the zooming. Oh wow. That's going to be really useful tomorrow. :-) Thanks!

I can't complain too much as I got my x-100 with 1.11 installed. I don't know what it was like with 1.0 or 1.1.

Faster focusing would be nice - but I find it quite usable as is.
The MF ring sensitivity would be really nice.
    Faster write speeds
More filter options - or custom filter sets.

    That's about it.
  • Only one thing needs to change for me - the incorrectly displayed dof indicator. It's setup (seemingly) thinking this camera has a 35mm lens, it doesn't, it's 28mm...

I actually like the focus ring as it is. The way I hold and carry the camera, if it was more sensitive I would forever be moving it out of focus and having to re-adjust. If you need to get to a focus point quickly in manual focus, press the AFL button...

  • My major beefs are the battery status indicator and the DOF. I normally preset the DOF as most of my shooting in a fast changing street situation. So, I set the DOF using a hard copy table I've got for 23mm lens.

BTW RAW button can be used for in-camera RAW processing. I normally use it to preview B&W version

  • @ Steve1401 : What do you mean it's a 28mm? Actually, the lens is a 23mm lens, which correlates into 35mm as a 35mm Equivalent focal length. So, I'm not following you...?

That's why the camera comes with a manual:

(page 56 describes the RAW button)

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, I think!
  • This functionality of this button is indeed the single most important reason for me to buy a X series camera.

  • Faster write speeds
  • Faster write speeds
  • I wish:

1080p Video out put if it is possible.
Accurate Auto focus & Manual controls like my Panasonic GH2.
    Time lapse.
    Fast write speed.
  • Fastest shutter speed for Auto ISO at 1/250 sec or 1/500 sec rather than the current limit for a fastest speed of 1/125 sec. That should be a simple fix.
