X30 AF Problem

Recommended Posts

Even in macro mode, the X30 is not achieving AF in fairly close distances.  I was trying to focus on a flower, but got the red AF warning, and this occurred no matter what the zoom setting.

Any suggestions?

Unless they have changed the lens arrangement super macro (and maybe macro as well) only work when the lens is at the widest setting. If you try to zoom macro does not work and you can't focus on close objects.

If you were in super macro it's unlikely you were too close if you were trying to zoom. You can have the front of the lens almost touching the object. The zoom will be the issue you cannot move the zoom even a mm from the widest setting otherwise macro does not work.

(I posted this on another thread, but it's really more appropriate here.)

I have an X30, which I've used a little over the last few months.  If I set it to autofocus, put it onto a tripod to make sure there's no camera shake, and then repeatedly press the shutter button half-way to have it focus, I can see on the distance scale that it will sometimes focus at infinity and sometimes at 30 ft.  This is while pointing it at an object a few hundred feet away and using the smallest focus square, with spot focusing.  So, nothing changes, but the autofocus will suddenly say things are a different distances!  I have quite a few pictures, taken at a party, where everyone in all of the pictures is out of focus!

Any hints?  Should I just return it to Fuji under warrantee?  I purchased it maybe 6 months ago.

Contact you local Fuji service and report the problem. This same problem has affected other models which just a fix in the latest FW update (XT20, XT2, XP2, X100F). As below:

  • 1. The phenomenon is fixed that in the MF mode, repeated halfway shutter pressing can shift the focus point under a specific exposure condition.
  • 2.The phenomenon is fixed that in the AF-S mode, repeated halfway shutter pressing can shift the focus point with SHUTTER AF setting OFF.

Maybe they will issue a fix for X30 but hopefully they'll at least fix yours.

I have now updated my firmware from 1.00 to 1.03.  The notes don't say anything about any focus issues, but I'll obviously need to test it out again.  Thanks for the pointers!

Also try using a larger focus square. The smallest is not necessarily more accurate since a tiny bit of movement can make it miss a small target.
