X100F can't switch to OVF

I've had my X100F since launch and it's never given me any trouble. Tonight I pulled it out in preparation for a trip and found that I can't switch to the OVF. The toggle switch left/right does nothing—no sound, no image flicker, nothing. The EVF just stays displayed as if I did nothing. The shutter on the viewfinder opens/closes properly when I bring it up to my eye, and switching to/from Viewfinder Only mode works great.

I've seen lots of threads with this happening on the X100T or S because of macro mode but obviously that isn't an issue on the F. I also saw some suggestions about AF single vs. multi point, but again, not an issue on the F.

Any ideas? Thanks!

It was something that happened with the original X100. The little moving EVF panel in the eyepiece jammed. One fix that did work for some was to take the battery out of the battery and leave it out for a couple of hours then put it back in and restart the camera.

I'll give this a try and report back, thanks! My shutter isn't stuck—it opens and closes when turning the camera on and off or get close enough to activate the eye sensor.

This is the first time I've used the camera since installing the 2.0 firmware update, however...

I wonder if resetting it back to factory defaults might be worth a try? You will lose your settings, but perhaps it could solve it. You can find the reset option in the menu.

I actually just found the Fuji Acquire software that lets you backup your settings to your computer, so I may just try this!

I feel like I'm going crazy: after a full reset now it stays stuck with only the OVF! I can't get the EVF to come up, or the picture-in-picture focus preview/assist.

After restoring my saved settings it goes back to my original issue: stuck in EVF.

What is happening??

Spoke to Fuji repair, they think it's either the front cover or lens assembly. Luckily it's under warranty. I'm gonna send it in after my trip next week.

Thanks for the suggestions folks!

Well, got my camera back from Fuji repair. The tech wrote: "Replaced front const and lens. Checked and cleaned."

I put in my battery, turned it on and it was in OVF mode (all settings reset to factory default). Flipped the switch once and the little focus assist appeared in the lower right! Tried to switch it back... and nothing. Tried flipping the switch the other way (to EVF mode) and nothing.:(

I restored my old settings from before I sent it off and now it's stuck back in EVF mode again.

So maybe this had nothing to do with hardware at all and there's something else going on. But if I had some setting that was causing EVF mode to be stuck on, then restoring to factory should make everything work again, right??

What am I supposed to doooooooo....

Stuck EVF panel by the sounds of things.

The panel opens/closes correctly when doing something like opening the menu. It just doesn't respond to flipping the switch left/right on the front.

I thought I had this problem with my X100T but it was just that I was in MF and had focussed too close. Focusing on a distant object enabled the lever to work. Your issue may be different of course.

I had the same experience recently. Also found out (to my embarrassment) that the front switch had gone to "c" when up or down in my bag, hehe.

Hi Cannikin.  I do not have the F but came here for answers to the same problem.  I have an X100T and after trying almost everything - I found Shooting Menu #1 "Autofocus Setting" and Macro Mode was ON.   I turned it OFF and my EVF OVF are working again.  Sorry if that doesn't work on an F but thanks for asking the question - my answer was in responses to your question.

Have accidentally found another one!  If a custom colour filter is in use (blue only, red only etc) No OVF.   Don't know what's different about the F and Macro On is not the issue for F but perhaps this is your problem?

Thanks for the reply! I can’t even find a macro setting on the F. I don’t think it’s a feature you have to enable any longer: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60949796

I don’t have any filters on...and I’ve done a factory reset which should definitely get it back to working settings. :(

Hello Cannikin,

Were you able to resolve your EVF/OVF problem? I just discovered a similar problem with my X100F. Ive had it for over a year with no problems. I usually leave it in the OVF mode but a few weeks ago tried to switch to EVF and nothing happens. It seems stuck in OVF. However if I manual focus in OVF the EVF does pop up for the zoomed focus check. so it works momentarily but then returns to OVF after pressing shutter button. But I cant get it to stay in normal EVF.  I havent tried resetting to factory yet. Ive tried changing some of the settings but no luck..

I'd be interested if anyone has found a solution to fixing without sending it to Fuji.

Thanks

I was able to resolve this!

<drumroll>

I installed the 2.11 firmware a couple of weeks ago. When the camera turned back on, the EVF/OVF switch worked!

But even better news is that I'm getting my X100V tomorrow. :)

I'm having the same issue with a second hand purchase.. Any help or insight would be great.!

OVF is fine but won't change with the selector, so is stuck on OVF.

EVF image comes up when 'focus check' is pressed, also 'preview depth of field' but reverts to OVF when shutter is pressed..

Ive reinstalled firmware 2.11 but no change.. can anyone please help.!?

I have a similar issue with my X100V. I was shooting today, no problem. Suddenly the eye sensor stopped working. It was just after attaching a newly acquired teleconverter (TCL 100X II ) for the first time... my eye sensor no longer switches automatically. The front lever does nothing to change view mode.  I can set to OVF in the menu but lose EVF...I  have reset the camera, removed battery and card. NO JOY. The camera is only a couple of weeks old (only 700 actuations). It's under warranty but my nearest accessible Fuji dealer is 500 miles away and the nearest one is a no-go zone due to border closure... driving me nuts.
Any tips?

Does it work normally when you take the TCL off?

I cannot see a way that the TCL will be anything other than a coincidence because there is no mechanical connection between the TCL and the camera only the little magnet in the lens that auto changes the settings in Exif.

Is there anything covering the actual eye sensor beside the viewfinder?
