Great Photographers to Check Out - Past and Present

Recommended Posts

gryphon1911

Based on a discussion here:

http://www.fujixseries.com/discussion/5190/a-not-so-well-known-but-great-street-photographer-fan-ho

I've compiled a list of great photographers that I think the community will enjoy. Some of them are NSFW, so please bear that in mind if you decide to research them. Let me know if you find ones that are and we can add NSFW to them.

I'm going to put the list of them out there now, then add links to them later as I find them.

I invite one and all to investigate them and add ones I may have missed or you think we should all have a look at.

Please know that if I do not include someone, that is not a slight on them or their work - I just don't know them all! :D

Also, I tried to grab all the ones already added to the link above.

So here starts the list - in no particular order:

Not to be a smartass, but given your willingness to work an image after the fact I'm surprised you don't have any guys like Jerry Uelsmann or Robert Heineken listed. John Baldessari. Lucas Samaras. Duane Micheals.

I would not have taken it that way! :D

I've just not gotten the whole list complete yet. I do like Jerry Uelsmann's work....just have not added him to the list yet. I'll add a place holder for him now.

Although, if you are familiar with Philippe Halsman, I already had someone heavy handed with the post processing in there! LOL

Also, I am not familiar with these photographers works: John Baldessari. Lucas Samaras. Duane Micheals.

So, you've given me some people to look into! Thanks

I can live without St. Ansel.

You guys have seen the 'Masters of Photography' site, no? When I taught Photo 1 (it's all 3D for me now) it was where I sent them as a starter. Ad laden, as I remember, but useful for having the basics in one place.

The ads have gotten worse - first link now seems to transport you to another dimension altogether, but it is an excellent resource as a starting point.

@gryphon1911 - I'll transpose the guys not on your list that I mentioned on the previous thread over here. It might be an idea to maintain the thread and add them to your first entry so it's all kept neat, but I'll leave that to you...

Fred Herzog is an amazing visionary working mainly in Vancouver.

Garry Winogrand is another obvious choice. A nice selection of video's on

Check out Alec Soth - he's a VERY talented guy..!!

Vanessa Winship & George Georgiou are a couple. They take nice photos. Nuff said... (she is less 'street' if that's what this thread is about)

William Eggleston: If you're gonna buy one of his books, my personal recommendation would the William Eggleston Guide.

Don Hudson. Great photographer. I found him on the Flickr-verse, but I've purchased one of his books here

For another genre - Don McCullin and some of the US war/disaster guys. Surprised we have only a few females on the list but I'm struggling to think of more myself. Julia Margaret Cameron from the mid 1800s is definitely worth a look, a big cut above the standard portrait photographer of the time.

When we add a photographer to this thread, can we also have a small tidbit in there for what they are known for or the type of photography they do?

As this list grows, it will help those that are targeting a specific genre.

Thanks! :D

There are a lot of obvious names in there, a good thing for those coming to this thread who just setting out in photography I guess, but this list could grow too large and unwieldily if there isn't some kind of organisation.

For example, I would really like a list of up 'n' comers; particularly Street Photography. That's the main reason I buy BJP. A lot of the masters can be studied and learned from, but I want to see new ideas as well...

David LaChapelle is one of my favorites. He has also directed music videos, theater and documentaries. He's mainly well-known for pop and celebrity portraits for fashion/lifestyle magazines but his social and commentary photography is provocative as well. A lot of vivid imagery and theatrical presentation goes into his photographs.

He's the director of Moby's

video, and his portraits of Courtney Love are great.

@gryphon1911, two things.

First, your link to the images of Walker Evans actually takes to the official webpage of Ed van der Elsken.

Second, I think Elliott Erwitt (documentary, ironic photography) deserves to be added to the list.

Great effort here, gryphon. Picking photogs, old & new, is always a bit controversial, but this is a worthy list. And like them all or not, everyone should be very familiar with each photog you've listed. 5 stars.

Thanks. I thought this would be a great resource for the community and I don't mind keeping it up to date or adding new links..

@gryphon, can't believe you weren't familiar with Duane Michaels. He's a really seminar figure, heavily collected and in numerous books. He did a lot of spooky images long before digital was ever heard of.

Kertesz is one of the giant giants from the 20th cen. No list is complete w/o him.

You could drop Eggleston & Ansel in the guise of avoiding gimmicky and images smacking of hokey. But each has his advocates (although, thankfully, the numbers are diminishing.)
