Great Photographers to Check Out - Past and Present

Recommended Posts

All good candidates, although Caponigro & Brett W are such technical wizards that their wizardry threats their own artistic vision. It's possible to have too much of a good thing.

Also, add Saul Leiter, considered the finest street photographer from the New York School. Died in Nov, age 89. A new movie/documentary about Saul is being released this weekend in NY. Working largely in the 50s and 60s, he was the first to use color film extensively in his street shooting. He was part of the circle that included Weegee and Arbus and Avedon.

Here's a link to today's article (not sure if it's viewable w/o a subscription):

And another, his obit:

Btw, if Richard Avedon has not already been nominated in this thread, he should be included.

New Addition - Jim Marshall

Iconic music photographer.

Lots of great images here, and until recently, did not know the photographer behind them.

What about Long Than? I had the pleasure of visiting his studio in VietNam when I visited there in 2010. I am impressed by his work. What do you think?

This copy of the image does no justice to the original. However, you can see why it is appealing to some of us in its simplicity.

For those of you who are into street photography and urban environmental - look up Lou Stouman and in particular, his book "Ordinary Miracles."
