  1. My studio work involves simple lighting setups—usually no more than two lights. For a couple of years I've been using Yongnuo RF-603C triggers (one on the camera, and the other on the Einstein). I usually use a Canon DSLR in the studio. This setup has worked fine. I'd like to try transitioning to the X-Pro2 in the studio, but my first efforts ran into a major snag: the X-Pro2 hotshoe isn't sending a signal to the trigger. (Camera set to sync speed, and I ran through all the flash options in the Menu, etc.) This appears to be a communications issue with the Yongnuo, because if I attached a speedlight to the X-Pro2, the speedlight will fire. (Likewise, if I run a PC cable from the socket on the X-Pro2 to the strobe it will fire. If I run a PC cable from the camera socket to the Yongnuo, tripping the shutter doesn't signal the Yonguo.) I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue. Alternatively, I'd be interested in knowing what radio triggers are being used successfully with the X-Pro2. Thanks!
  2. Nice review, Dan. And always great images. I'm holding off on any more investment in Fuji. Their efforts at releasing new bodies at a breakneck pace is a bad omen. The XT10 is a handicapped XT1 merely aimed at a different price point. (A notable shift from the progression of x100 to x100s.) They're committing the cardinal sin of going for profit instead of broadening market share. Their line is getting too confusing, and is rapidly just becoming a price comparison. Worse, this camera is a kick in the face to those who invested in the XE2. It's very sad, because I viewed Fuji as going where Leica should have. Now it looks like Fuji is going the way of Canon. The repairs to my x100s were the cost of a new body. Meanwhile, my circa 1972 Leica M6TTL continues to increase in value. Premium prices for a premium brand requires a commitment to treat the customers and the market in a way which shows them that their significant investment will endure. Fuji isn't doing it yet. (And I wouldn't expect a Leica-esque increase in value. But a well built camera losing 80% of its value in a year is the wrong pace.) I hope it's just growing pains and Fuji will soon get back to making a few good cameras instead of treating the parts like so many Taco Bell ingredients to just be remixed and renamed to fill a long menu.

  4. For digital I use B+W neutral multicoated filters. For film, I use yellow filters. Shooting requires my eyes to be on the subject and not protecting the cameras and lenses. So there are always the inevitable door bangs and the blind switching of lenses and cameras in the bag or dropping them in a pocket. Filters have saved quite a few repair costs. And although I'm sure there must be image quality differences, I'm also sure that a Fujinon with modern optics and a filter beats a pristine filterless Zeiss of a years ago. (There are even many Leica lenses where the coatings oxidize inside the barrel.) In the end, my view is that it's the content of the frame that matters for "image quality."
  5. Triggertrap provides all kinds of options for timed shutter releases. I use it with my Canon. Same dongle works on the Fujis. But I use it only for few and special needs. Fine for what it does. But if it were me, I'd just shoot with the iPhone if I had a hand in a cast. Using a camera, dongle, and a phone to trigger the camera is more things than I like to do with two hands, much less just one. It's definitely not a street set up! Btw, you can download the Triggertrap app and see what it does. Doesn't do anything without the dongle, but you can see the features.

  8. I've gone through a couple of packs of the Eclipse Sensor Swabs, and there are still a few spots that I can't seem to get rid of. I suspect they must be oil. I don't know if this is a particular issue with Fuji or if other makers have these issues. (Never had them with my Canon.) I've considered sending the X-E1 off for a factory service cleaning, but Fuji's efforts to undercut their customers by not updating older cameras makes the cost of service too close to the cost of replacement. So I just live with it.
  9. I solved the bag problem. I bought the WCL and TCL for the X100s. Now my "bag" is any light jacket which has a pocket. (Review, here: http://bit.ly/1GWf0Bq. Most of the pix I took for the Iran piece (http://bit.ly/1GTrkrn) were with this kit. I used the X-E1 only with an 8mm Rokinon on it for a few shots.) Especially for working in sensitive environments, the X100s with these two optics is nearly impossible to beat.

  11. The X-E1 seems particularly to attract crap to it. I recently had a bit of a disaster with a dirty sensor while in Istanbul. Travel tip: carry a sensor swab with you, because they're *really* hard to find in some countries!
  12. I love Aperture. Its tools are sensible and logical to use. I added Lightroom because of client needs, and my new images go in it. I have many thousands of images in Aperture, and still use it for those. So I run both several times a week. No issues with the latest Mac OS. I was really hoping the new Photos.app would be something special, but it's just a disappointment. It's a true shame Apple gave up on photographers who care about their work.
  13. I use the Wasabi batteries and chargers and haven't encountered that problem. Sounds like a bad battery. I find the x-e1 to be very particular about the battery charge. It really prefers Fuji batteries and I believe my shutter locks are caused by the third party batteries. But none of them have had a flashing light.
  14. No clue about the lens. I had two Fuji failures on my last trip to the Middle East. I just shot with a blurry viewfinder and coped with an intermittently locking up shutter. So my solution would just be to keep turning it off and on. :/ But traveling for six months?? That's the interesting part of your post! Say more!
